Restrictive Conditions on F-16 Sales to Turkey Removed

The clauses introduced by the US House of Representatives that restrict the sale of F-16s to Turkey were completely removed from the law.

The aforementioned bill, presented by Frank Pallone in July 2022, prohibited the export of new F-16 warplanes and F-16 modernization kits to Turkey. In this context, the bill prohibited the sale of F-16s to Turkey unless it provided a guarantee to the US President that it served the national interests and that Greek airspace would not be violated.

With the decision taken on December 7, 2022, these restrictions were lifted. Making a statement on the subject, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said, “Technical talks on the supply of F-16s continue in a constructive environment. We know that the US administration has full support for the sale of the F-16. The statements made to us at the meetings are in this direction. It is also emphasized that this sale will be beneficial to the NATO alliance. This sale needs to be approved as soon as possible. It doesn't make sense for us to take it if it's subject to any conditions." used the phrases.
