Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Club athletes left their mark on 2022 and won 43 medals, 347 of which were international. Kerem Kamal became the World Champion in wrestling and Onur Taştan became the European Champion in judo.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Club, which is one of the biggest sports clubs in Turkey in terms of number of athletes and branches, once again achieved significant success in 2022. Athletes from Izmir competing in a total of 41 branches won 127 medals, 347 of which were gold. 43 of these medals came from international organizations.

Judo players at the top again

The peak in individual branches was again in judo, as every year. Judo players took the podium 39 times in total with 26 gold, 28 silver and 93 bronze medals in national and international competitions. After judo, triathlon and ice skating shared the second place with 49 medals each. 24 gold, 18 silver and 7 bronze in triathlon, 22 gold, 15 silver and 11 bronze in ice skating came to İzmir. Gymnastics ranked third with a total of 11 medals, including 6 gold, 11 silver and 28 bronze. 27 medals were won in swimming, 18 medals each in fencing and archery, 17 medals each in taekwondo and athletics, 11 medals in tennis, 9 medals in wrestling and 5 medals in handicapped table tennis.

43 international medals

Athletes of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality wore 15 medals, 16 gold, 15 silver and 43 bronze, in the international arena. Judo took the top spot with 19 medals in the list of those who received the most medals from abroad. Judo was followed by gymnastics with 9 medals, while ice skating took the third place with 7 medals. Taekwondo 4 medals, wrestling and archery 2 medals each.

Kerem Kamal became world champion

Wrestler Kerem Kamal achieved the greatest success in international competitions. The young wrestler won a gold medal at the U23 Greco-Roman World Championship in Spain. Emrah Kuş came third in the Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya and brought the bronze medal to İzmir. Duru Çimen, Gökçe Doğa, Batu Tasasız, Deniz Tarım and Derya Taiga won medals in ice skating at international events in Serbia, Bulgaria and Istanbul. Eren Özdemir, who competed in the Gymnasiade Summer Games, came second in the world, while 17-year-old Mehmet Efe Özdemir became the Balkan champion.

Gökhan Biçer is the European champion in judo

In judo, Enes Bilge, Yusuf Özel, Mervenur Alkış, Berat Bahadır, Şeydanur Aydın, Musa Şimşek and visually impaired athletes Gökhan Biçer and Onur Taştan became medal winners in both the World and European championships. Gökhan Biçer became the European champion in 90 kg in Italy, and won both silver and bronze medals at the World Championships. Onur Taştan also wore the silver medal in the 90 kilos at the World Championships, while our two athletes had a great advantage on their way to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Altan Doğan brought 9 medals won from abroad in gymnastics. Alp Deniz Öcek, Selin Naz Öcek and Lina Elmiladi took place on the podium in fencing. In archery, Sıla Özdemir won two silver medals in the Gymnasiade 2022 competition.

Great success in water polo

Success in water polo, which was established in 2021, continued to come in 2022. The water polo teams, which won the men's and women's cups in U15, U17, U19 last year, became the second in the U2022 Women's and U21 women's leagues in 17. She reached the championship in the Women's 1st League. The championship trophy of the U19 Women's 1st League and the U15 Women's 2nd League was brought to İzmir. In figure skating, the club championship was won in 2022. The Underwater Rugby Women's Team finished second in the league. Amputee football team also won the third place trophy in both the Super League and the Turkish Cup.

We are proud of our nationals

Athletes who went to the Amputee Football and Wheelchair Basketball National Team shared very important successes. Goalkeeper Erdi Aslan and outfitter Polat Doğan became the names that represented our club in the Amputee Football National Team, which won the World Championship by beating Angola in Istanbul. Our national team, played by Wheelchair Basketball Team players Hasan Efetürk, Rıdvan Aksoy, Mahmut Açıkgöz and Arda Albayrak, played in the final of the Under-23 World Championship in Thailand and took the second place. The Wheelchair Basketball National Team, which includes Ahmet Efetürk, Mahsum İpekişen, Rıdvan Aksoy, Hakan Kıroğlan and masseur Serkan Sezginci, lifted the championship trophy in the European B League.

Great performance from special athletes

Special athletes of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Club also achieved significant success. Umurcan Aydınoğlu wore 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals in the national competitions he participated in. Tuna Tunca was applauded for her performance by winning 1 gold and 1 silver medal in national competitions.
