Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü evaluated the reasons for the interest in violent TV series and movies and their effects on mental health.

Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, who said that the broadcasts with violent content on the screens have increased a lot lately and that the interest in TV series and movies with such content is high, said, "These TV series have started to appear more and more because they have received ratings. The violence applied along with these serials also tends to increase. It directly affects the society. Too frequent processing of violence in the media can lead to modeling, normalizing and depersonalizing violence. Some TV series have negative effects on mental health," he warned.

Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, who noted that serials and movies with violent content are more preferred and watched because they are scary and exciting, said, “Violent broadcasts on television reach people of all ages and negatively affect children in many ways. There are serials that are seriously violent and that are watched a lot. Especially adolescents sometimes copy these role models without any mental processing. Violence is approved in the series. Children learn many things through technology and make it a behavior.”

Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, who says that children can learn about violence from screens, said, “What kind of content children and young people are exposed to is important. Aggressive behaviors and violent tendencies may occur through modeling in children watching such content. Violence can be reflected in the behavior of children. It can cause consequences such as negatively affecting children's school success, conflict in peer relations, turning to behaviors that are not accepted by the society, and developing aggressive attitudes.

Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, who said that the effect of the "Squid Game" series, which was on the most watched list on a platform last year, on children and young people was the subject of discussion, said, "This series was very popular, especially among school-age children. The children started to play some of the games played in the series among themselves and to reenact the scenes of violence," he said.

Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, who stated that the scenes of violence started to desensitize the individual to violence and make her ordinary, said, “Programs containing violence should not be included in television programs. Parents and adults have some responsibilities to prevent this situation. Caregivers should not leave children in front of the screen for a long time to spend time, and screen use should be limited. Children should control what kind of content they watch and should be protected from programs that will negatively affect their development. According to studies, it has been revealed that children who watch violent cartoons fight more than their peers and have difficulty coping with intense emotions.

Specialist Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, who warned, “Although watching violent TV series and movies is seen as a form of entertainment, has harmful effects”, concluded her words as follows:

“There is some research done on the brains of people who have been exposed to violent content. In a study, it was revealed that young people who were exposed to violent video games had difficulties in attention, decision-making and self-control, and showed weaknesses in recognizing, feeling and managing emotions.
