Üsküdar University Health Services Vocational School (SHMYO) Orthopedic Prosthesis and Orthotics Program Head Lect. See. Kübra Akkalay made evaluations and recommendations about the bionic hand application developed for amputated limbs in the upper part of the body.

Stating that the bionic hand is an example of human anatomy and functions in congenital anomalies or subsequent problems, Lecturer. See. Kübra Akkalay said, “The limb that has lost its function with modern hand surgery techniques and prostheses is reconstructed with the bionic hand. It can be applied to the limbs whose upper extremity is amputated. By working with the bionic chips placed in the socket, all the movements that a real hand can do can be made. Objects are sensed with the bionic hand, and it is ensured that they are held and grasped with precision.

Stating that the bionic hand is suitable for children who need hand and finger prosthesis after their bone development is completed, Lecturer. See. Kübra Akkalay said, “Since bone development continues in children, bionic hand application should be done after the age of 20. The weight of the bionic hand may be difficult to carry in pediatric patients. Children do not want to wear and use a heavy prosthesis. With the non-adaptable prosthesis, both their education and social lives are negatively affected.”

Emphasizing that pediatric patients who need to use prostheses should be checked at least once every six months, Lecturer. See. Kübra Akkalay said, “If necessary, prostheses should be renewed. Developing and growing bone tissue causes prostheses to remain small in children, so prostheses should be renewed with regular follow-up. We can say that the use of mechanical hand prostheses is more appropriate for children who will use prostheses, since control and renewals cost the family. Mechanical prostheses are light and cost-effective. It is visually colored so that children can adapt to their prostheses. It is enough to be careful about the heat when using the mechanical hand.”

Stating that tests are performed for nerves and muscles in the limb, Üsküdar University SHMYO Orthopedic Prosthesis and Orthotics Program Head, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Lecturer. See. Kübra Akkalay said, “Bionic hands are applied to patients who are approved after the tests. The sensors in the bionic hand socket should not get wet and should not be exposed to sweat. The sweating limb and the inside of the socket should be properly dried. At the same time, the battery should not be exposed to heat and water.”
