Prizes Found in Barış Selçuk Journalism Contest

The awards were given in the 1994rd Barış Selçuk Journalism Contest, organized by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality this year, in order to keep the memory of journalist Barış Selçuk, who died as a result of a traffic accident on his way to the news in 23, and to encourage young journalists.

Selection Committee of Barış Selçuk Journalism Contest, Press Council President Pınar Türenç, Turkish Journalists Association Vice President and FOX TV Editor-in-Chief Doğan Şentürk, İzmir Journalists Association President Dilek Gappi, Turkish Journalists Union İzmir Branch President Halil Hüner, Hürriyet Newspaper Aegean Region Representative Deniz Sipahi met with the participation of Turkish Photojournalists Association Vice President and Aegean Region Representative Şükrü Akın, journalist-writer Faruk Bildirici, Deniz Zeyrek, Barış Pehlivan and Journalist Erdal İzgi.

At the evaluation meeting, where the Chairman of the Jury was Pınar Türenç, President of the Press Council, the first prizes in the branches of National News, İzmir City News, İzmir Kent TV, News Photography and Hande Mumcu Encouragement Awards were determined.

As a result of the Selection Committee meeting, the awarded works were determined as follows:

In the category of "İzmir City News", the news of "Neighbor with bussed from TOKİ" by Mehmet İnmez from Cumhuriyet Newspaper won the first place. Feyyaz Tatar won the Hande Mumcu Encouragement Award in this category with the news titled “İzmir has the honor of erecting the first statue of Gazi” published in Ege Telegraf Newspaper.

In "National News" Sözcü Newspaper Özgür Cebe's article titled “The wax statue has been erected, but all the murderers are free” won the first prize. In this category, the Hande Mumcu Encouragement Award was received by Halk TV reporter Seyhan Avşar's "Confessions of an actor".

In the category of “İzmir City TV News”, the news of Gülçin Hacıevliyagil Ayçe and Mustafa Kemal Kiruk from Habertürk Television, “Veteran who was a slave in the homeland”, was awarded the first prize. Hande Mumcu Encouragement Award in this branch received the news of Halil Şahin and Onur Fatih Doğan from Anadolu Agency “Despite the fear of heights, he works in wind turbines and skyscrapers”.

Mehmet Emin Mengüarslan's photograph from Anadolu Agency, published in the news titled “Aerial elements of the exercise”, was awarded the first prize in the “News Photography” category. Journalist Metin Yoksu won the Hande Mumcu Encouragement Award with his photograph published in an article titled “Kurds are flying” on Gazete Wall.

Who is Baris Selcuk?

Born in Aydın on September 21, 1961, Barış Selçuk completed his primary education in Anamur in 1972, secondary education in Eskişehir Devrim Secondary School, and high school in Trabzon High School. He graduated from Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, which he entered in 1978, in 1983. He did his military service as a second lieutenant in the Kırklareli Infantry Regiment in 1984-1986. He worked as "economy" in Yeni Asır Newspaper in 1986, "politics" in Günaydın Newspaper in 1989-1990, and "Parliamentary correspondent" in Ankara Bureau of Hürriyet Newspaper in 1991. On August 5, 1994, while going to watch Tansu Çiller and Murat Karayalçın's announcement of the hazelnut base price in Giresun, her reporter friend Hande Mumcu, cameraman Salih Peker and the driver of the vehicle died in a traffic accident.
