TÜBİTAK Focuses on Climate Change

Konya, which is one of the provinces experiencing the most profound climate change in Turkey, has gained an institutional structure to coordinate the researches to be carried out in this field. A Clean Energy, Climate Change and Sustainability Research Institute was established within TÜBİTAK. The Institute will conduct research focused on climate change in Turkey's green development process.

Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank, in his presentation on the budget of the ministry at the Parliamentary Plan and Budget Commission, "We are establishing the TÜBİTAK Clean Energy, Climate Change and Sustainability Research Institute in Konya to coordinate scientific research towards our climate goals." said.

THE FOUNDATIONS ARE LAUNCHED HERE

The establishment process of the institute started with the Climate Council held in Konya in February this year by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. There, the idea that an institute should be established to follow up the decisions taken in the focus of science and technology has matured. With the guidance of Minister Varank and Minister of Environment and Urbanization Murat Kurum, the installation works were started.

INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS AND SOLUTIONS

The institute, which was established with the approval of the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Board under the Presidency and the approval of the TUBITAK Board of Directors; will transform the knowledge and technologies created in universities, public research centers and institutes into innovative products and solutions in line with Turkey's needs.

FOCUS AREAS

Institute; It will focus on areas such as renewable and clean energy, future scenarios and social policy research. It will plan and coordinate R&D studies in these focus areas and contribute to the policy development processes of the public.

WE WILL FOLLOW THE DECISIONS

The institute, which will work with all stakeholders in the ecosystem; public, academia and private sector will give importance to cooperation. It will follow up the decisions taken by the Climate Council in the context of science and technology. It will contribute to the work on the Climate Law.

COMPETENCY CENTERS

“Competence centers” will be established for roadmap and planning studies at the national level in each research area where the Institute operates. Competence centers will coordinate the work carried out in thematic areas with university research laboratories in my ecosystem, private sector R&D centers and entrepreneurs and public research units.

COMMERCIALIZATION OF R&D

The Institute will also focus on the commercialization of the R&D. For this purpose, it will conduct large-scale field demonstrations and pilot production activities where technology verification studies will be carried out. In this way, the technologies, models and approaches developed will be implemented with “co-development platforms” in line with the needs of the industry.

YOUNG RESEARCHERS SCHOLARSHIP

Competent researchers in the field will be assigned to the institute. Scholarships will be awarded to young researchers working in the field of climate change.
