Cataract is a disease that develops when our natural lens in our eye loses its transparency. It is also known as white water among the people. The most common cause is aging, and it can also be seen in young people for reasons such as injury to the eye or the use of cortisone drugs for any reason. In cataract surgeries, the lens that has lost its transparency with the phacoemulsification method is taken from the eye and an artificial intraocular lens is placed in the same sac.
One of the most frequently asked questions to us here is "Is it okay if a lens is not placed in the eye?" Since our lens, which is located inside our eye, is the structure that focuses the rays coming into the eye on the retina layer of our eye, it is necessary to place a lens in the eye after cataract removal. In other words, if the lens is not placed in the eye, the sense of sight will not function properly.
In the past years, when the phacoemulsification method was not yet developed and routinely applied, it was expected that the cataract would fully mature or even harden for cataract surgery. However, these conditions do not apply today. There is no need to wait for the hardening of the cataract with the phacoemulsification method. The operation can be performed in the presence of complaints such as blurred vision, glare at night, light sensitivity, pale and yellowed image compared to the past. If the operation is delayed, complications such as delayed wound healing, edema accumulation in the transparent layer called cornea, development of edema in the retina layer, falling of the cataract to the posterior parts of the eye may be encountered, and in very hardened cases, stitching methods used in the past years may be required. Significant astigmatism may develop after the application of stitched methods and it is necessary to use glasses in order to obtain quality vision.
Conditions such as the material, optical quality and focal number of the lenses to be used in the operation affect the quality of vision and viewing distances. In lens selection, the patient's age, lifestyle, occupation, refractive errors before cataract surgery should be considered, and the most correct choice should be made. Another question we often come across is whether these lenses are for life or not. These lenses will remain in our eyes for life and will not deteriorate if a quality lens is chosen.
