Building Inventory Studies Continue in Bornova

The works initiated by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to make the city resistant to disasters continue uninterruptedly. The modeling of soil structure and soil behavior characteristics started in Bornova. Drilling wells of 50 meters will be drilled in the district. In order to understand the movement of earthquake waves, measurements will be made at 565 points. When the works are completed, the suitability for settlement will be evaluated by considering all kinds of disaster risks in the district.

The works initiated by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to make the city resistant to disasters after the October 30 earthquake continue. While the seismicity research, which examines the building inventory and faults, continues, the modeling of the soil structure and soil behavior characteristics was started in Bornova. The Metropolitan started the first drilling work from Kayadibi neighborhood to determine the disaster risk of the region. 50 thousand meters of geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological drilling wells will be drilled in the district. Experts will divide the study area into 565 regions and make drilling and geophysical measurements in each region. Rock and soil soil samples will be taken. When the works are completed, all kinds of disaster hazards and risks, from landslide to liquefaction, from medical geology to flood, and the suitability of the region for settlement will be evaluated. In project scope BayraklıWork will be carried out on a total area of 12 thousand hectares within the borders of , Bornova and Konak.

Deep drilling will be carried out at 7 meters

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department Head Banu Dayangaç stated that in order to reveal the geological structure of the Bornova basin, a total of 450 thousand meters of deep drilling will be carried out, each of which is deeper than 7 meters, and said, “To determine the soil dynamic parameters in 17 of these deep wells. For this purpose, the method used in the determination of seismic velocities will be applied. In addition, geophysical measurements such as vibration and seismic refraction will be made at 565 points in order to understand the movement of earthquake waves.

“We will obtain all the data on the ground structure”

Banu Dayangaç, who also stated that the mechanism of mass movements such as landslides will be determined with long-term monitoring in the region, said Bornova, Konak and BayraklıHe emphasized that geological, geotechnical, geophysical studies and laboratory researches for microzonation will be carried out in Turkey. Stating that the data obtained from the ground studies will be integrated with the data obtained from the seismicity and tsunami research, Dayangaç said, “By integrating the data we obtained on the ground structure of the Bornova basin with the building inventory study we carried out at the same time in the district, we will have identified all the risks arising from the structure-ground interaction. Thus, we will reveal the urban improvement measures that need to be taken.”

“The change in water levels will be followed”

Bulut Hepyukselen, M.Sc. Geology Engineer at the Disaster Risk Management Branch, said that the changes in groundwater levels contain important data about earthquakes and that they had the chance to observe these changes with the drilling works.

“We are taking a CT scan of Izmir”

Abidin Yavaş, Mining Engineer at the Disaster Risk Management Branch, stated that they took a tomography of İzmir with the studies and said, “Earthquake does not kill, unplanned unscheduled works that ignore disaster safety do. We have stepped up our steps to prevent uncertainties regarding disaster safety in our city and to ensure that our citizens can live more safely.”
The works carried out by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality with its own resources are aimed to be completed in 2024.

The earthquake risk of the city will be determined

The building inventory studies initiated by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality are also BayraklıIt continues in Bornova after . Approximately 62 thousand buildings will be examined in the district. Continuing its seismicity research in which the land and sea faults in the area with a radius of 100 kilometers are investigated, the Metropolitan will be able to reveal the level of earthquake danger İzmir is facing with all these studies.
