The scientists of the future received their awards in the Secondary School Students Research Projects Final Competition organized by the TÜBİTAK Scientist Support Programs Presidency (BİDEB). In the competition, where 57 projects of 336 students from 180 provinces competed fiercely, Muşlu Bager Çalışcı and his friends received an incentive award with their “Unhindered Astronomy Dictionary” Project.
11-year-old visually impaired Çalışcı stated that they prepared a dictionary to explain the subject of astronomy to the visually impaired and said, "I can visualize the sky in my mind thanks to this dictionary." said. His project colleague Melek Şehir Kutlu also described the project's output, “One day in the lesson, our teacher asked Bager a question. 'How can you more easily visualize the shapes of sky names?' Bager said, 'If the celestial bodies have ridges and the names are written in Braille below, I can portray them better.' said, and we developed the project on that.” told in his words.
Çalışcı, who was born visually impaired, is also a Beethoven fan. The player has the ability to define the pitch of a musical tone, called "Perfect Ear" in music, without using a reference pitch. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave an acoustic piano to Çalışcı, who wants to become a famous pianist in the future, last year.
FINAL IN DİYARBAKIR
Secondary School Students' Research Projects Final Competition, which was held for the 16th time this year, was held in Diyarbakır. In the challenging 5-day marathon; 10 projects that made it to the finals competed in 180 fields: Biology, Geography, Values Education, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, History, Technological Design, Turkish and Software.
INTERESTING THEMES
The jury consisting of academics working at various universities; evaluated research projects such as ecological balance, food safety, agriculture and livestock technologies, and digital transformation. Among the projects competing in the final, themes such as wearable technologies, health and biomedical device technologies, disaster management, aviation and space, and sustainable development also drew attention.
EXCITING DORUKTA
The award ceremony of the competition was held at Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Sezai Karakoç Culture and Congress Center. To the ceremony; Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology, President of TÜBİTAK Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, BİDEB President Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Ursavaş, Deputy Governor of Diyarbakır Murat Yıldız, Diyarbakır Provincial Director of National Education Murat Küçükali as well as competing students, their teachers and their families attended.
3 FIRST PLACE IN ANTALYA
In the competition, 10 projects won first place, 20 projects second place, 30 projects third place, and 30 projects received incentive awards. Antalya (3), Samsun, Rize, Balıkesir, Denizli, Adana, Hatay and Manisa became the winners. Kacır, Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology, and Mandal, President of TUBITAK, gave their awards to successful projects.
RANKED FIRST WITH ITS DATA SECURITY PROJECT
Hilal Keskin, 15, who participated in the competition from Denizli, won one of the first prizes with her research on “Rational Cryptography from Pythagorean Triples to Equations” in the field of mathematics. Explaining his project, Keskin said, “I developed an encryption algorithm to be a part of the solution to the problems arising from today's data transfer. Even in the messaging applications we use in our daily life, this is a function that works in the background, hiding data. If we can write the code for this; I will continue to work for this; I think it will be very beneficial for us to be able to transfer data securely in daily life.” said.
VIRTUAL ASSISTANT FOR THE VISUALLY HANDICAPPED
Eylul Ciftci (14) and Ege Arslan (14) from Izmir won the first prize in the field of software with their project “Designing a virtual assistant supported augmented reality application to increase the in-school independent mobility of visually impaired students”. Eylül Çiftçi told the story of the project as follows:
INDOOR NAVIGATION
We have a visually impaired friend, we have been in the same class with him for 4 years, we were always helping him. We wondered how it would be if he could do this on his own, and we did this project. We designed a mobile application. The application is an indoor navigation system, its name is Future Step by Step. In this way, there are places where our visually impaired friend can go, the places he uses most often. It gets sound notifications, like turn right turn left. Our visually impaired friend also tried it, so he can move.
WE DID A SURVEY
He was 90 percent visually impaired from birth, could not eat, had problems in transitioning between classes. We have observed this need while helping him since the 5th grade. We started out with this idea because we could not always be there for you. We also conducted a survey to see if this is also the case for other visually impaired people. When we tried the application, we saw that it was very useful, we saw that it could move forward without needing us.
SELF CLEANING MASK
Reber Ülkü (13) and Efe Alikaya (13), who participated in the competition from Muş, also received an incentive award in the field of biology with their copper sulfide nanoparticle mask project that does not produce microplastics, biodegradable, self-cleaning, antimicrobial, inactivating Kovid-19. While Reber Ülkü stated that no bacteria grew in the mask they developed, Efe Alikaya said, “Because our mask also kills the virus that comes to the mask; It also prevents it from getting to us, so it may decrease the cases.” said.
31 THOUSAND STUDENTS ATTENDED
The competition aims to make secondary school students work in the fields of basic, social and applied science, to direct these studies and to contribute to the scientific development of the students. This year, a total of 4 thousand 583 students, 13 thousand 585 boys and 17 thousand 416 girls, from 31 thousand 1 schools participated in the competition. Compared to 2021, there was a 53 percent increase in applications. Students applied for a total of 23 projects this year.
REGIONAL FINALS
The regional finals exhibition was held in Adana, Ankara, Bursa, Erzurum, Istanbul Asia, Istanbul Europe, Izmir, Kayseri, Konya, Malatya, Samsun, Van between 28-31 March 2022. Among the 218 projects that passed the preliminary evaluation, 57 projects prepared by 148 students from 336 provinces and 180 different schools were entitled to participate in the final in Diyarbakır.
