Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Vocational and Art Training Courses (KO-MEK) attaches importance to the cultivation of medicinal aromatic plants, which has become a new employment area, with increasing interest in it lately. With the support initiated under the leadership of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tahir Büyükakın, trainings continue at KO-MEK for the further dissemination of medicinal mint, rosemary and lemon balm, which are planted to encourage high value-added medicinal and aromatic plant production.
330 TRAINERS HAVE TRAINED
KO-MEK has trained 330 trainees on planting, growing and harvesting medicinal and aromatic plants thanks to the courses opened in the past periods. Medicinal and aromatic plants, which have become widespread in Kocaeli and that many citizens have started to cultivate after receiving training on this subject, are sold thanks to the distillation facility established by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality and continue to contribute to the family budgets of the producer.
SUPPORT TO AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT FROM BÜYÜKAKIN
As it is known, thanks to the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Project (TABIP), which was developed by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality to support agricultural development, millions of seedlings met the soil. Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Assoc. Dr. Thanks to the viable projects carried out by Tahir Büyükakın, the villagers are now more conscious and happy to receive the reward of their labor.
GREAT SUPPORT TO AGRICULTURE FROM METROPOLITAN
Medical Aromatic Plant Breeding trainees who received training at KO-MEK visited the distillation facility, which is Turkey's largest Medicinal Aromatic Plant Production and Processing Facility, and closely examined the processing of aromatic plants. The trainees, who witnessed the journey of aromatic plants from the field to the sale, received information from the authorities about the transactions. In the facility, which covers an area of 42 decares, essential oils are obtained by water vapor method and products with high added value are prepared for use in the pharmaceutical, supplementary food and cosmetics industries.
MEDICAL AROMATIC AND HERB GROWING COURSES AT KO-MEK
Medicinal Aromatic Plant Cultivation has started to gain an important place today. Medicinal Aromatic Plant Breeding, which has become a source of livelihood with the support of the state, draws attention from the citizens in Kocaeli. In this framework, KO-MEK evaluates the demands and opens trainings in the course centers where sufficient applications are created, and citizens continue to offer Medicinal Aromatic Plant Breeding courses.
FIRST THEORETICAL AFTER PRACTICAL EDUCATION
In the Medicinal Aromatic Plant Breeding course given by KO-MEK, firstly the technical details of plant cultivation are explained. In this context, the trainees learn about the characteristics of plants, their cultivation, care, harvest, threshing and storage. Theoretical knowledge is supported by practical training. At this stage, the plants whose seeds and fruits are used are defined, and practices such as planting, maintenance and harvesting are shown on the field. The subject of planting onions and seeds of plants is also transferred to the trainees in practice.
FROM GEBZE TO KO-MEK MEVLANA COURSE CENTER
Murat Güler, one of the trainees who visited the distillation center of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, said, “I am an electrician, but I wanted to receive training from KO-MEK especially to grow aromatic plants. I come from Gebze and get training at the Mevlana KO-MEK course center. Medicinal aromatic plants can be used in every field and I want to be a grower in this field because they are healthy. I love KO-MEK courses and I want to benefit from all courses that interest me to improve myself in this field,'' he said.
KO-MEK CERTIFICATE IS IMPORTANT TO GET GOVERNMENT INCENTIVES
On the other hand, the KO-MEK certificate for Growing Medicinal Aromatic Plants has a golden meaning. KO-MEK certificate is an important basis for obtaining the necessary incentives from the state and in the field of seed cultivation. For this reason, many citizens come to the branch from Kocaeli as well as the surrounding provinces to receive training.
