Yiğit Özer, firefighter of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, met once again with the baby Zümra Nehir, whom he rescued from the flames last week. Yiğit Özer, who sent his wishes to get well soon as a guest at the baby's house, took the baby in his arms to love him this time. Mother Havva Araz thanked Özer for saving both her baby and herself.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, which runs to dozens of fire and accident reports every day and struggles to save lives, carried out a heart-warming rescue operation last week. Havva Araz, who lived on the fourth floor, and her 1,5-month-old baby Zümra Nehir were trapped in the smoke when the fire in an apartment in the Çamlıkule District of Buca engulfed the lower floors. At a time when hopes were about to fade, the fire fighters of Izmir Fire Brigade came to the rescue of the young mother and her baby. No matter how frightening what happened, the two protagonists of the story that ended happily, Yiğit Özer and Zümra Nehir baby, came together again a week later. Özer conveyed his wishes to the Araz family and this time, Nehir took the baby in her arms to love it.
“I saved a baby for the first time”
Özer explained the incident as follows: “We came to the scene after the 112 Call Center reported a fire. It was learned that a mother and her baby were trapped in the apartment on the top floor of the four-storey building. We reached the scene in a short time and got the fire under control, which was partially extinguished by the residents.” Stating that he quickly took the mother and baby out and handed them over to the paramedics at the scene after the smoke was evacuated, Özer continued: “I was very happy when the paramedics said that the mother and baby were in good health. I've gone on numerous missions but saved a baby for the first time. This made me very happy."
Mother Araz: “I was confused about what to do”
Mother Havva Araz said the following about the incident: “I fed my baby and put him to bed. The television was also on. All of a sudden the TV turned off. Sounds started coming from outside. I opened the window and saw that there was a fire. I was so scared. I did not know where the fire started. I ran to the stairs with my baby, but it was all smoke up there. His eyes could not see. I was confused what to do. At that moment, I had a very different feeling. There was too much smoke as soon as I went down with my baby. If I had, my baby wouldn't have been able to. This time I went back to the house and went out to the balcony. The child is in my arms, it is cold.”

Expressing that he immediately called the fire department, Araz said, “It was the most terrible moments I have ever experienced. I waited with my child, I did not know what to do. The house is full of smoke. I heard firefighters knocking on the door. But I couldn't get into the house because there was smoke inside. The teams told me to leave the baby on the balcony and open the door. So did I. Thankfully, the firefighter immediately took my child and took him so that he would not be exposed to the smoke.” Araz thanked Yiğit Özer for saving both himself and his baby.
