Suggestions from Rector Tarhan to Ensure Permanent Learning

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, in his statement on the occasion of the 24 November Teachers' Day, drew attention to the impact of the teacher on the child's development and mental health. Noting that the teacher is one of the most important role models in the child's life after his parents, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan draws attention to the reasons why the first teachers are never forgotten. Saying, "The educator must first enter the heart, not the mind," Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Because a person forgets what he/she has heard, he/she remembers what he/she understands later and with difficulty. He never forgets what he experienced and felt. This is what permanent learning is.” said. According to Tarhan, an education model that includes love and gives education in a disciplined and fun way should be adopted.

Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, in his statement on the occasion of the 24 November Teachers' Day, drew attention to the impact of the teacher on the child's development and mental health.

Teachers are the lifeblood of education

Noting that teachers are one of the most important role models in a child's life, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The educator must first be able to enter the heart, not the mind, because the person forgets what they listen to, remembers what they understand later and with difficulty. He never forgets what he experienced and felt. This is what permanent learning is. with love in it; It is important to adopt an education model that will activate not only the thinking brain but also the feeling brain of our students in a disciplined and fun way. That's why we describe teachers as 'the lifeblood of education'." said. Noting that teaching is not only a profession, but also an art, Tarhan said, “Just like when a sapling is planted, lifeline is given. The teacher also gives life to the child at school. It keeps him alive.” said.

The ideal teacher enters the heart, not the mind.

Stating that the methods in which the mind and emotion are together in the learning method provide permanent learning, Tarhan stated that the teacher's entry into the heart of the student, not the mind, makes learning more permanent. “Only what you hear is at the top of the learning pyramid,” said Tarhan. “You hear it in the classroom, you listen and then you forget. Towards the middle of the pyramid there are things you understand from what you hear. What you understand will be more permanent, but if you don't repeat it, you will lose them too. But there is also a person's experiences and feelings. Never forget them. There's no need for repetition. The brain permanently records emotions when they are involved. Therefore, educators, do not try to enter the minds and brains of students; try to get into your heart. The ideal teacher does not enter the mind, it enters the heart. When it enters the heart, that teacher is now the hero of the student. Records everything you say. The best management is to be a good example. In other words, the teacher must be a good example in the classroom and the student must love him so that he can learn the lesson. If he likes the lesson, he learns well. So what should she do to like the lesson? It is very helpful for the child to love the teacher. If he likes the teacher, the child also likes the lesson. It is easier to learn. What should the teacher do to like the lesson? The teacher must love the student. When the teacher loves the student, the student also loves the lesson, loves the teacher and learns.” said.

The child's asking questions to the teacher improves self-confidence

Noting that the teacher has a special place in the child's self-confidence development, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Iranian mathematician Prof. Dr. Meryem Mirzakhani is asked the reason for this success at that time. She laughs and says, 'I will tell you but you won't believe it. I owe this award to my mother. They are surprised by this answer and ask why. He answers: 'Mothers and fathers, when the child returns from school, he asks the child: 'What did the teacher ask? What did you answer?' But my mother didn't do that. He was saying to me, 'What did you ask the teacher?' she was saying she. So it is important that the child asks the right question to the teacher. Here, Mirzakhani's mother's approach is one that increases the child's self-confidence and academic self-efficacy. A motivation-enhancing approach. She thinks what should I ask the teacher when the child goes to school. The child does not run away saying, 'The teacher asks me, please don't ask'. On the contrary, 'What should I ask?' she thinks. So this is a self-confidence-boosting approach. This attitude leads one to his Nobel. How does something seemingly simple affect your life? For this reason, the attitude of the teacher is very important along with the attitudes of the parents.” she said.

Our primary school teacher is the one who sows the seed of our developing soul

Emphasizing the importance of the teacher's identity and personality in the academic success of the child, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “The teacher is the hero of the child, especially in primary school. It is the first personality in the outside world after the mother and father. Especially our primary school teachers are the people who planted the seeds of our lives and developing spirit. Most of us do not forget our first teacher. He is the most important person to guide us. Therefore, teaching is truly a sacred duty.” said.

The teacher should be the guiding captain for the student.

Underlining that teachers should be captains for young people to learn about life, Tarhan said, “While the teaching profession is a profession for the teacher, the teacher is almost a life guide for the student. Teaching in primary school is more important. Students imitate the teacher's three things. One of them is the lesson he teaches, the other is the traits in his personality structure, that is, they take his character as an example, and lastly, they take his social relationships as an example. Especially the adolescence period is the period when the questions 'who am I, where should I learn, for whom' are asked. He will learn about life by looking at the reaction of the young teacher in the mistakes made during this period. That's why we say not to take it and fix it, but to take it with us and walk together, this is leadership. In other words, teachers who will act as pilots. So do the parents. What is a 'guide captain'? The captain drives the ship. Responsible. The pilot teaches him about life by saying that if you do this, it will be like this, if you do that, it will be like this. Parents or teachers will be pilots.” he said.

The teacher must be a trustworthy leader.

Recommending educators to use the teaching method by giving confidence, not by intimidation, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that the method of persuasion and endearment is more suitable for the 21st century. Tarhan; “The teacher is the class leader. The best leadership will be emotional leadership. This is psychological superiority, hierarchical leadership not authoritative leadership. It is not leadership that teaches by intimidation, but leadership that teaches by trust. When love increases, fear decreases and trust increases. Where there is fear, there is quiet discipline. When there is no teacher, they all fall apart. In other words, education was provided by pressure, threat, intimidation and intimidation in ancient cultures. Currently, that method is already an ideal method, but it is not the method of this time. Nor is it a 21st century skill. Right now, an educated person should use the method of persuasion, persuasion and endearment.” said.

Noting that the biggest investment in a child is not the information given to him, but the appreciation of him, Tarhan said, “The most important thing for the child is to feel loved and to understand this. When children have problems, it is necessary to talk to them and find out the real reason. If the teacher shouts at the child who does not listen to himself in the classroom and scolds him, "What are you doing," the child will not learn anything, but the teacher will go to him and say, "You were not like this. Why are you stagnant, is there anything we can do?' the child will suddenly feel a sense of belonging. The role of logical intelligence in success is 20 percent, the role of other types of multiple intelligences is 80 percent. The role of social intelligence, especially emotional intelligence, is 80 percent. Therefore, we need to train children's feeling brains, not their thinking brains. Our ancestors called it mind-heart unity.” he said.
