Stakeholders of the Mineral Water Industry Discussed the Benefits of Mineral Water

The panel titled “Importance of Mineral Water in terms of Nutrition and Health” was held with the participation of leading names in the sector at the International Mineral Water Congress, which was organized for the second time by Kızılay Natural Mineral Waters and came to the fore with the theme "Mineral Water for a Lifetime".

Organized by Kızılay Natural Mineral Waters, academicians and industry stakeholders who have conducted research in the field of mineral water in Turkey, II. It came together as part of the International Mineral Water Congress. The panel titled “Importance of Mineral Water for Nutrition and Health” held on the first day of the congress attracted great attention.

Moderated by Turkey Newspaper Health Editor Ziyneti Kocabıyık, the panel was attended by İstanbul Cerrahpaşa University Faculty Member and Kartal Kızılay Hospital General Surgery Specialist. Dr. Alper Cihan, Dietitian Elvan Odabaşı, American Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist Assoc. Dr. Bülent Assistant, İTÜ Food Engineer Beraat Özçelik attended.

Emphasizing that mineral water consumption is very important for health, Prof. Dr. Alper Cihan said, “We cannot say that all carbonated drinks are unhealthy. Its content needs to be read. At what dose do we consume colored liquids? If you drink them at a micro level, they have little health effects, but if you drink them in high amounts, they have toxic effects. Unfortunately, the illuminating label system is very low in Turkey. All food needs a very serious control mechanism. Recently, these inspections are carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture. There are very serious controls in the production of mineral water. It is held very tightly.” said.

Pointing out that the per capita consumption of mineral water in Turkey is quite low, Dyt. Elvan Odabaşı stated that mineral water communication regarding health and nutrition should be strengthened. Odabaşı said, “We need to strengthen the mineral water communication regarding health and nutrition. Because we do not know that mineral water should be on the table. Mineral water is very useful for the human body in terms of calcium and magnesium. In our country, it is always complained about calcium deficiency, iron deficiency and irregular digestive comfort. First of all, for these reasons, we should put our mineral waters on the tables. Our children in the age of growth and development are fed poorly in calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. We need to give mineral water to our children. Breastfeeding mothers need to drink. Young people and children should be able to drink around 2-3 bottles a day.” said.

ITU Food Engineer Prof. Dr. Beraat Özçelik explained the difference between mineral water and soda. Stating that mineral waters are formed completely naturally between 10 and 100 years, Prof. Dr. Özçelik said that soda is formed by enriching the water with carbon dioxide. American Hospital Internal Medicine Specialist Assoc. Dr. Bülent Yardimci drew attention to the relationship between sodium and mineral water and stated that the amount of sodium in mineral water cannot be evaluated independently of the individual's diet. Assoc. Dr. "It is especially important for athletes and pregnant women to consume mineral water, but it is a food that should definitely be consumed as a source of magnesium and calcium for the elderly." said.
