The Parent Information and Education Center, which was established by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in 2021, continues its efforts to strengthen the disabled and their families. Today, a panel and workshop was held at the Historical Coal Gas Factory with the participation of approximately 400 parents. The report from the workshop will be shared with the relevant organizations to create new disability policies.
The Parent Information and Training Center, which was opened in 2021 under İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Social Projects Department, Disabled Services Branch Directorate, continues its efforts to strengthen families with disabilities in the fields of education, information, service and advocacy. Today, “Panel and Workshop for Disabled Parents” was held at the Historic Gas Plant with the participation of approximately 400 parents. Speaking at the opening of the workshop, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu said, “As İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, we continue our efforts with our vision of İzmir without Barriers, so that all our citizens with disabilities can live unhindered in our city. The problems faced by our citizens with disabled children in their daily lives stem from the problems and unconsciousness related to the implementation of the rights of the disabled. Our Parent Information and Education Center, which we opened after seeing the inadequacy of disability policies, carries out important studies in this context. I hope that this workshop, where we will focus on the identification of problems and solution proposals, will shed light on future studies.
The report will be prepared
The 4th Term President of the Barrier-Free Izmir Congress Assoc. Dr. Levent Köstem, on the other hand, said, “When we first started to work with Engelsizmir, we started with a common mind by bringing together everyone involved in this field, and we have been trying to hold these common mind meetings as Engelsizmir for 12 years. After each meeting, we try to develop policies regarding disability issues. Your participation here today is very important to us. It is very important to talk about the problems of parents with disabled children. A report will be prepared by our scientific committee to present you with the information to be obtained from here.

In the workshop, each participant presented their own experience, difficulties, support needs and solution suggestions. These recommendations will be made into a report and shared with the relevant organizations, so that new disability policies will be created.
