Two giant pandas left the breeding center in the southwest Chinese province of Sichuan on Tuesday (October 18th) to be sent to China as part of a cooperation program between China and Qatar on research and conservation for this species.

The two pandas who left Ya'an base, the research and conservation center for giant pandas, are a three-year-old female named Si Hai and a four-year-old male named Jing Jing. Both pandas will be transported to Qatar on a private plane that will depart from Chengdu's Shuangliu international airport.

The cooperation program on pandas in question is the first program to be held between China and the Middle East. The China Giant Panda Research and Breeding Conservation Center has commissioned experienced caregivers and veterinarians to take care of these animals during their journey and assist them in the process of acclimatizing to their new environment.

Pandas have passed health checks for a month and have been quarantined. The center announced that they were both completely healthy. On the other hand, Chinese experts have contributed to the formation of a professional team in raising pandas and regulating their living conditions, as well as giving advice on the place where the pandas will live in Qatar.

In May 2020, China and Qatar signed a cooperation agreement for research to protect giant pandas and to promote international cooperation in the conservation of biodiversity and endangered species in both countries. The sending of two pandas to Qatar today also takes place within the context of this cooperation agreement.
