Conjunctivitis in Autumn Attention!

Private Kaşkaloğlu Eye Hospital Chief Physician Op. Dr. Bilgehan Sezgin Asena pointed out that conjunctivitis, which manifests itself with symptoms such as redness, watery eyes, pain, itching and stinging, increases in the spring and autumn months.

Stating that Allergic Conjunctivitis peaks in the spring and autumn months and often affects children, Op. Dr. Bilgehan Sezgin Asena said, “Besides, viral conjunctivitis increases in autumn and winter months. With the opening of schools, returning to crowded, communal living areas, conjunctivitis caused by viruses manifests itself with symptoms such as redness, watering, and burrs of the eyes. This is an infectious disease. Closed areas cause viral conjunctivitis to be seen as an epidemic.

EYE AND HAND CLEANING IS IMPORTANT

Kiss. Dr. Bilgehan Sezgin Asena stated that eye drops are used in the treatment of conjunctivitis and the ophthalmologist decides which drops to use and how much, and informed that the disease reduces the quality of life.

Asena continued: “The sclera, the white of the eye, is covered with a thin, onion-like layer. This layer, called the conjunctiva, secretes substances that moisturize the surface of the eye. There are fine veins in this layer and can be seen even with the naked eye when viewed carefully. When the conjunctiva becomes inflamed, the vessels become more prominent and the eye becomes red. Conjunctivitis occurs for different reasons. The most common are germs, allergies and irritants in the environment, such as cigarette smoke and air pollution. Conjunctivitis can be treated with drops. In some cases, it can go away without treatment. The most important issue here is to pay attention to eye and hand hygiene and to ventilate indoor environments. Since the immunity of the body decreases with the cooling of the weather in autumn, attention should be paid to taking vitamins during this period.
