It was stated that there is a risk of collapse of the historical Suleiman the Magnificent Bridge in Büyükçekmece, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, and restoration work has begun.
In the statement made by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, “The Bridge Restoration Implementation Projects; It was prepared under the supervision and consultancy of the Directorate of General Directorate of Highways, Historical Bridges Branch, and was approved by the decision of the Istanbul No. 1 Cultural Heritage Conservation Regional Board, dated 25.06.2020 and numbered 5147: The restoration application tender of the bridge was carried out by the General Directorate of Highways affiliated to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, The site has been handed over.”
Built by the order of Suleiman the Magnificent, the bridge, which Mimar Sinan called 'my masterpiece', has a length of 638 meters and a width of 7.17 meters. During the preparations for the Zigetvar Expedition, which was the last expedition of Suleiman the Magnificent, the construction of the bridge, which started in 1563, was completed in 1567/1568 by Sultan II. It was completed during the Selim period. 4 thousand square meters of stone were used for the bridge, which consists of 28 separate sections and 40 arches.
Suleiman the Magnificent Bridge, the only work built by Mimar Sinan, who served as the chief architect in the Ottoman Empire, is registered as a group 1 cultural property to be protected.
About Suleiman the Magnificent Bridge
Suleiman the Magnificent Bridge is a historical bridge located in Büyükçekmece district of Istanbul province, between Büyükçekmece and Mimarsinan District.
It was built on the historical trade route connecting Istanbul to Europe, at the point where Büyükçekmece Lake meets the Marmara Sea. The bridge, built by Mimar Sinan, is 36 km from Istanbul. Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566) ordered a bridge to be built here when the army had difficulty in crossing the rafts from this point where Büyükçekmece Lake and the sea met while he was on the Zigetvar Expedition. However, as Suleiman the Magnificent died in the Siege of Zigetvar, the bridge was built by his son II. It was completed during the reign of Selim I in 1567.
Sokullu Mehmet Pasha Mosque, Kurşunlu Han and I. Süleyman Fountain are also located in the touristic area at the entrance of the bridge.
Mimar Sinan's “The bridge is my masterpiece among my works.” This bridge is 636 meters long and 7,17 meters wide. During the construction of the bridge, which consists of 4 separate sections and 28 arches, the lake's waters were emptied with large pumps and 40.000 m³ of stone was used. The bridge, which was restored between 1986-1989, is the symbol of the district.
