President Soyer Visited Youth Camp Themed 'Young People Are Talking Water'

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyervisited the youth camp held in Olivelo Living Park. Pointing out that water resources are rapidly depleting, Mayor Soyer said, “This business is no joke. We have to protect it now and together. Every citizen should bear this sensitivity and do what is necessary.”

The 12th youth camps implemented by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality are organized with the theme of “Youth is Talking Water”. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor on the second day of the camp held in Güzelbahçe Olivelo Living Park in cooperation with İZSU General Directorate, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Social Projects Department, Youth Studies and Social Projects Branch Directorate and İZDOĞA AŞ to raise awareness about the climate crisis and the importance of water. Tunç Soyer met with the youth. President Soyer addressed the climate crisis and called for water savings.

Citizens' call for awareness

Reminding that a life in harmony with nature should be preferred, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, said: “What we need to do is to live in harmony with the balance of nature, production, consumption… In other words, it is about paying attention to the small water footprint of a product we produce. This is something we must do in every moment of life. We all have a responsibility. This cannot be solved by the laws and legal regulations enacted by the states, nor by the practices of the municipalities. Every citizen should bear this sensitivity and do what is necessary.”

Rainwater harvesting work

Explaining that as Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, they have made a serious study on the planning of the product pattern at the basin scale on agricultural production. Tunç Soyer, We have a study on rainwater harvesting. Perhaps we are preparing the most comprehensive study in Turkey. On the other hand, we are trying to grow this sensitivity in this city. This is no joke. There's no after this thing. We have to take care of it now and together," he said.

At the end of his speech, President Soyer pointed out that more than 50 percent of young people are looking for their future abroad and said that it is possible to change this by acting together.

Thanks to Marmara Lake from the youth

One of the young people participating in the camp thanked President Soyer for his struggle to prevent the Marmara Lake from drying out and said, “My family lives in Salihli. You came to Marmara Lake with your own worries. You are interested. Thank you. Your effort is priceless,” he said.

nature photography workshop

The second day of the camp started with the nature photography workshop prepared by Zeynel Aydın. Young campers, who had a pleasant time in nature after the workshop, met with Water Management Specialist from Boğaziçi University, Dr. Akgün İlhan participated in the panel on “The Right to Access to Water”, in which he was a speaker. Dr. Akgün İlhan gave detailed information about the human right to water, the packaged water sector and the potable water flowing from the tap.

The second day of the camp ended with the screening of a film about a possible thirst in the Turkey of the future. The camp, which aims to bring young people together with nature and raise awareness about the climate crisis and the importance of water, ends today.
