Within the scope of the registration activities carried out by the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM), affiliated to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, 2004 breeds belonging to 11 animal species have been registered since 77. Studies on animal breeds in Turkey were initiated in 2004, and the Regulation on the Registration of Pet Genetic Resources entered into force in 2011.
In this context, the Pet Genetic Resources Registration Committee was established and works on the registration of pets.
Scientific studies of Pet Genetic Resources are evaluated in sub-committees and information on breed, type, local type, line and ecotypes deemed sufficient is submitted to the registration committee. After the decision taken by the Committee, the breeds decided to be registered are published in the Official Gazette.
Within the scope of the registration activities with the studies carried out, a total of 2004 ovine breeds, 6 of which are cattle and 1 buffalo, 7 bovine, 34 sheep and 6 goat, have been registered since 40. In addition, 7 chickens, 8 bees, 6 pigeons, 3 silkworm lines, 3 dog, 2 cat and 1 rabbit breeds have been registered. Thus, a total of 11 breeds belonging to 77 animal species were registered.
Among those registered in this process are breeds such as Denizli rooster, Karacabey merino, Angora goat, Hatay yellow, Kangal, Van cat, Angora cat and Anatolian bee.
This year, Yalova curly vernacular type and Yığılca honey bee ecotype were registered on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and scientific preparation studies are continuing for the registration of other species.
The identification and registration of Pet Genetic Resources is based not only on general appearance and morphometric measurements, but also on the use of the latest molecular techniques in registration studies by subcommittees.
