The studies carried out within the scope of the "Marine Litter Provincial Action Plans", which were initiated with the "Zero Waste Blue Movement" in order to ensure an effective fight against marine litter at the national level by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, General Directorate of Environmental Management, Department of Marine and Coastal Management, continue uninterruptedly. It has been announced that approximately 180 thousand tons of waste has been collected from the sea surface, bottom and coasts to date, and 135 thousand tons of these wastes are plastic. It was stated that 2022 sea sweepers were assigned to Muğla in July 2 in order to support the studies on keeping the seas constantly clean, and 13 thousand 121 kilograms of marine litter have been collected and disposed of from the sea so far.

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change follows a strategy to protect nature, the environment and its seas due to pollution in the environment, nature, soil and seas. In this context, efforts continue uninterruptedly to prevent pollution in the sea, to protect sea creatures and to reduce the effects of climate change.

In the statement of the Ministry, it was reminded that the Circular on the Preparation and Implementation of Marine Litter Provincial Action Plans was published on 10 June 2019. It was underlined that within the scope of the Circular on the Preparation and Implementation of Marine Litter Provincial Action Plans, in order to ensure an effective fight against marine litter, provincial action plans were created in 5 provinces with a coastline for a period of 28 years.

“The activity report to be prepared regarding the realization status of the activities included in the Marine Litter Provincial Action Plan and the measures to be taken for their compensation is submitted to the Ministry with the signature of the governor every year. Thus, the effectiveness of the activities and measures carried out in the province can be followed closely. With the implementation of the circular, the formation of marine litter is prevented by measures at the source; It is ensured that studies are carried out to clean up the existing marine litter on the coast, on the sea surface and on the seabed, and education and awareness-raising activities are disseminated at the national level.

“It has been announced that 135 thousand tons of waste collected from the sea is plastic”

In the statement, it was emphasized that 135 thousand tons of waste collected during the cleaning works carried out on the sea surface, seabed and coasts of the whole country was plastic. In its statement, the Ministry stated that the "Zero Waste Blue Movement", which was initiated under the auspices of the Presidency, was carried out within the scope of activities aimed at raising public awareness.

In the statement, it was stated that in addition to all these studies, 2 sea brooms were deployed in Marmaris and Fethiye bays in order to support the Ministry's efforts to keep the seas clean throughout the province of Muğla. It was emphasized that the sea sweepers, which started to work in July 2022, have collected and disposed of 13 thousand 121 kilograms of marine litter from the sea so far in their work.
