The General Directorate of Forestry of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has been providing solar power plant support with the project it has been carrying out since 2016 in order to ensure the development of forest villages. With the project, a solar power plant (GES) system has been installed on the roofs of 40 houses in 144 forest villages in 1490 provinces so far.

Forest villagers are supported by the works and projects carried out by the General Directorate of Forestry. ORKOY, under the General Directorate, aims to improve the quality of life and increase their income levels by supporting forest villagers with socio-economic projects in order to protect, develop and operate forests. It aims to reduce the negative pressure on forests and the consumption of wood as fuel, to ensure sustainable management of forests by regulating forest-public relations.

Within the scope of ORKOY, 23 million forest villagers living in 100 forest villages/neighborhoods in Turkey and their Agricultural Development Cooperatives are supported. 7 percent of the loan support is received as a grant, the remaining 20 percent as 80 installment per year, in 1-3 years and interest-free, depending on the type of project.

In order to support the social and economic development of forest villagers, the General Directorate of Forestry implements technological developments by constantly developing new projects and financial solutions by following environmental opportunities. In this context, a project proposal was made in 2014 so that forest villagers from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) could produce the electrical energy they consume.

The “Sustainable Finance Mechanism Project for Electricity Production from Solar Energy in Forest Villages in Turkey” (ORKÖY PV Project) was accepted by GEF and started to be implemented in 2016 with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Grid-tied Roof Type SPP applications have been initiated so that our forest villagers can meet the electricity they consume from solar energy.

Within the scope of Roof SPP applications, in the first stage, the installation of Roof Type Grid Connected Solar Power Plants (Çatı ŞEBGES) with 19 kWe power and 26 percent GEF grant support to 255 households in 360 forest villages in 100 provinces was completed.

In the next stage, co-financed project studies were initiated and in 2021, 33 percent of the project was covered by GEF grant support and 67 percent from the budget of the General Directorate of Forestry. With this application, Roof Type ŞEBGES with 24 kWe power was installed in 56 households in 551 forest villages in 1126 provinces.

Currently, the installation of a 20 kWe Roof ŞEBGES on the roofs of 70 forest villagers in 684 forest villages in 1387,5 provinces continues.

Since the beginning of the project, Roof ŞEBGES has been installed on the roofs of 27 households in 40 forest villages in 67 provinces and 144 districts within 1490 Regional Directorates of Forestry.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Prof. Dr. Vahit Kirişci stated that they attach great importance to the development of forest villagers.

Emphasizing that the General Directorate of Forestry provides support for the activities carried out in many areas for the development of forest villagers, Kirişci said, “We support all kinds of projects that will ensure the sustainable management of forests in line with the policies and objectives of the Ministry, evaluate the products produced by the villagers and the workforce, enable on-site development, and provide employment.” made its assessment.
