Satellite Transmitter Tracking for Wild Animals

Within the scope of the action plan for the protection of endangered wild animals by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP); Satellite transmitters were fitted to species such as wild sheep, gazelle, fallow deer, wild goat, crane, crested pelican, imperial eagle, steppe eagle. With this method, the habitats, migration routes and breeding areas of wild animals will be determined and protected.

The General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks has prepared an action plan for the protection of endangered or at risk animal species in wildlife. Endangered within the scope of the plan prepared for 100 species; Satellite transmitters were installed on wild sheep, gazelle, fallow deer, wild goat, crane, crested pelican, imperial eagle and steppe eagle. With the follow-up carried out with the donors, the habitats, migration routes and breeding areas of the wild animals are determined and conservation work is carried out. Important data were obtained in the study on the protection of threatened species.

TURNAS BREED IN TÖDÜRGE AND KIZIZIRMAK

The crane bird is one of the most frequently watched species by satellite transmitters. It was determined that Sivas is among the important breeding areas for cranes followed by a transmitter attached to their back parts. It has been determined that Tödürge Lake and Kızılırmak basin in Sivas are one of the most important habitats for cranes breeding. Thereupon, work was started to declare these areas as wildlife development areas.

SAH KARTAL, BETWEEN BOLU AND ÇANKIRI

Again, the Anatolian population of the imperial eagle followed by the donor has not migrated until today; however, it was determined that the newborn puppies were scanning large areas to find a suitable habitat for them. It was determined that they had difficulty in finding suitable habitats for them and they generally breed in the forest clearings between Bolu and Çankırı. It was determined that the imperial eagle, which was found tired in the winter of 2022 and left to the nature after the rehabilitation process, went to Dagestan and has not left there yet.

STEEP EAGLE GOES TO CHAD

Again, it was determined that the steppe eagle, which was followed by the donor, was in a much more critical situation in terms of population size. Contrary to the imperial eagle, it was determined by the donors that the steppe eagle in Turkey is a migratory population, migrating to an area between Chad and Cameroon in winter. It was determined that the steppe eagle, which was tracked with the transmitter installed in 2022, started its migration at the end of August and is currently in Chad, according to the latest updates.

On the other hand, 50 of the 28 wild sheep that were relocated to the 3 thousand hectare field on Nurhak Mountain in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaraş this year were fitted with a transmitter. Again, transmitters were placed on 2 gazelles released into the wild in Şanlıurfa. While 2 gazelles are in the group of 30 gazelles, monitoring continues.
