China Takes 30 Percent of the Country's Land in the 'Red Line'

The Chinese government has declared that up to 30 percent of the country's territory is covered by the "ecological protection red line". The red line in question is a target adopted by the United Nations, and although it has not been officially accepted by China, it is a target that this country has already reached.

Zhuang Shaoqin, Deputy Minister of National Natural Resources, stated that the regeneration of the created national parks and valuable ecosystems has brought the total area under protection to exceed 30 percent of China's land. In fact, this rate is fully in line with the United Nations recommendation to protect 2030 percent of our planet's land and seas by 30.

China, which has already reached the target recommended by the United Nations, has not officially accepted the target in question. The target will be brought to the table in December this year during the discussions on the new global convention for biodiversity in Montreal.

China first brought up its "red line" program in 2011 to put an end to the decades-long irrational development process. In line with this program, some structures, workshops and hydroelectric power plants were demolished across the country and measures were taken against the agriculturalists who illegally spread their businesses to the protected lands.
