Alstom Trams in Cuenca Carry 19.000 Passengers Per Day

Alstom, the world leader in smart and sustainable mobility, celebrates two years of successful operation of its tram in Cuenca, Ecuador. The system has been officially operational since September 22, 2019 and currently carries around 19.000 passengers per day. According to the Municipality of Cuenca, which is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the system, the target is to reach 40.000 daily passengers.

The transportation system operating in Cuenca, whose historical walled city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, has become a new tourist attraction and is used by local and foreign tourists as well as those coming from Cuenca.

Javier Díaz, Cuenca Tram Project Director for Alstom, said: “We are very happy and proud of the successful and uninterrupted operation of the Alstom tram in Cuenca for two years, especially knowing that we are contributing to the smart and sustainable mobility of the city. The municipality provides many benefits to its citizens with the delivery of a quality product and system in partnership with our client.”

Alstom and its consortium partners are contracted to design, deliver, integrate and test the complete system, including 14 Alstom Citadis trams, power supply system, warehouse equipment, telecommunications and railway signaling equipment. In total, there are 20.4 stops along the tram network spread over 27 kilometers. The route passes through key sites in Cuenca, such as the El Arenal Market, a busy commercial hub, the Historic Centre, the Bus Station, Mariscal Lamar Airport and the city's Industrial Park.

Each unit of the Alstom Citadis tram is 33 meters long and corresponds to the new generation of this type of modern, fast, quiet, inclusive and low CO2 emission transport. Each Citadis tram is capable of carrying up to 215 people, displacing three buses or the equivalent of 280 private vehicles. This, combined with the fact that the system is an electric mobility system, helps reduce greenhouse gas pollution and carbon emissions.
