Mesut Özil (born October 15, 1988; Gelsenkirchen, West Germany) is a German football player of Turkish origin who plays in the number ten position. He plays in Istanbul Başakşehir, one of the Super League teams.
He played for Germany for 9 years and scored 92 goals and made 23 assists in 40 national matches. He also directly contributed to the German national team's winning the 2014 World Cup. Considering other organizations, he is the only player to have an assist king in the European Football Championship, FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Bundesliga, La Liga and Premier League.
Özil started his professional football career in 2006 by transferring to Schalke 04, a team of the city he was born in and playing in the Bundesliga. Then in 2008 he transferred to another Bundesliga team SV Werder Bremen. With his performance in the 2010 World Cup with Germany, he was transferred to Real Madrid, one of the La Liga teams, in August 2010. On the last day of the transfer window in the summer of 2013, he was transferred to Arsenal for £42,5 million, the highest transfer fee paid for a player in the club's history. In addition, Mesut Özil became the fourth player to earn the most in Real Madrid's history with this transfer. He was transferred to Fenerbahçe on January 25, 2021. He mutually terminated his contract with Fenerbahçe on 11 July 2022.
Özil donated the championship bonus he won after the World Cup with Germany to cover the surgical expenses of 23 sick children in Brazil.
He was awarded the Laureus Media Honor Award for his behavior. He has an older brother named Mutlu and two sisters named Neşe and Duygu.
He is married to Amine Gülşe.
