İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Ahmet Piriştina City Archive and Museum will organize a symposium titled “One Hundred Years of İzmir” as part of the 100th anniversary of the liberation of the city. For the symposium, a call was made to scientists, writers, researchers and artists.

The 100th anniversary of the liberation of İzmir continues to be celebrated with various events. Ahmet Piriştina City Archive and Museum (APİKAM), affiliated to the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality City History and Promotion Department, will organize a symposium with the title “The Hundred Years of Izmir” on 15-16-17 December. For the symposium, a call was made to scientists, writers, researchers and artists.

In the symposium, which will be held in order to understand and question the city, its transformations and future imaginations in the last century, scientists, writers and artists will discuss Izmir's 100 years from social structure to sports, from architecture to art, taking into account the material and moral heritage of the city.

Invitation to the symposium

In the invitation to the scientists, writers, researchers and artists working on İzmir, the following was stated:

“With the symposium to be organized, the traces of the change and development that the city has experienced in the historical process will be traced in the centennial of İzmir's liberation from the enemy occupation. The symposium will focus on the 100 years of construction of İzmir. While evaluating these 100 years, the modernization adventure of the city, which started about two hundred years ago, will also be looked at. While tracing Izmir, the transformation processes will be tried to be understood with these yields, and the city's hosting of various art disciplines will be revealed through excavations related to the perspective and methods of that discipline. It is expected to present papers that take into account the values and accumulations of previous centuries in the context of cultural continuity, even though it centers on the time period from the liberation of İzmir to the present. When looking at İzmir from such a framework, the expectation is that the authors reveal their original perspectives and experiences rather than the repetition and breakdown of historical information; to design their statements as a space of possibility for new thoughts and creations; the fact that they have a language and utterance that strengthens the city's contribution to peace and coexistence.”
