What is Celiac Disease? What are the symptoms?

Dietitian Bahadır Su gave important information about the subject. Celiac disease, which has become widespread recently, is a health problem defined by sensitivity to a protein called gluten, which is found in barley, wheat and rye. This problem, which has a genetic predisposition, can also be named as an allergic reaction to the gluten protein, which is characterized by malabsorption in the small intestine, which causes the deterioration of the structures called villi that provide digestion in the small intestine. The problem can be eliminated by removing gluten from the diet. Because celiac has the ability to mimic every disease.

Celiac disease can sometimes manifest itself with problems such as anemia, fatty liver, or it can progress silently without causing any complaints. Or it can manifest itself with skin problems.

The most obvious signs of the disease in children; diarrhea, abdominal pain, growth retardation, vomiting, bone and joint pain, weakness. In adults, bloating and diarrhea are the most prominent symptoms of celiac disease. Apart from these, weight loss, abdominal swelling, anemia, skin itching, severe headache, etc. …complaints can be encountered.

Dietitian Bahadır Su said, “The difficulty in diagnosing celiac disease is both because of the wide range of complaints and because none of these symptoms are unique to celiac disease. There is no definitive treatment for celiac disease. It is important that they remain faithful.”
