Data Recovery Services General Manager Serap Günal shares 5 important tips for users who do not want their data to fall into the hands of cyber attackers, which should be considered before putting their technological devices on sale.

Back up your data. When you plan to sell your smart devices, especially mobile phones, backing up existing data will be one of the first and most important steps. The backup process will not only help you keep your personal data safe, but also enable you to set up your newly purchased smart device faster and transfer your data faster.

Sign out of your accounts. Accounts used on smart devices need to be disabled. In this way, the new owner of the sold device will not have any problems when trying to activate the device and the risk of using your accounts will be eliminated.

Encrypt your data before deleting it. You need to securely encrypt all data on devices before erasing it so that user data becomes inaccessible without authentication methods. Protecting data with strong authentication methods will also prevent access when sold.

Remove SIM and SD cards. SIM, SD cards; it stores phone numbers, messages, billing information, photos and many more files related to your mobile phone. Therefore, both types of cards must be removed from the device before sale. If you're using a phone with an SD card and you no longer need it, you can delete the card and include it in the sale.

Reset to factory settings. Deleting a file on the phone does not completely destroy the data, it just marks it as empty. Deleted data is processed on top of it and while device usage continues in that way, people who want can access historical data. So the most reliable way would be to factory reset the device after all the steps have been completed.
