Switch between your RuneScape games in a flash

Jagex is testing a new launcher for their RuneScape Games. You can switch from farming OSRS gold to RS3 gold in a flash. It’s still in the testing phase, so you don’t have to opt in just yet; however, it will become mandatory soon.

What is the Jagex Launcher?

It’s a program that will unify your RuneScape franchise accounts. RuneScape, Old-School RuneScape, and future games that Jagex will develop will become part of this launcher. You can switch between different programs if you’re using the same account, but you can still change to another one if needed.

The launcher will remember your account so you can jump straight into your game instead of logging in for a few minutes. This means more time to master, master and explore in Gielinor.

As the launcher is still in testing, it currently only has the following capabilities:

  • Runelite detection and initialization

And here are the future plans of Jagex:

  • Multiple account support and authentication
  • macOS support
  • Creating a new Jagex account
  • Convert your RuneScape or OSRS account to a Jagex account
  • Merge all accounts into Jagex account

With the merger into a Jagex account, you’ll have access to any game the developer makes with the launcher. After all, they may be leading the RuneScape franchise, but they don’t have to limit themselves with it. Otherwise, they may partner with third-party developers and allow their games into the launcher. That’s not in the announced plans, but you know it’s possible.

How to Install Jagex Launcher

You can download an installer from their site here . Follow the on-screen instructions to install the program. Then open the app, log in using your RuneScape/OSRS account, and play!

System Requirements

All you need is an OS/RS compatible PC running on:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8 / 8.1
  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11

Note that the program is in beta testing, meaning there will be errors and bugs when using it. Report these as you encounter them so the developers can fix them. You’ll notice that macOS isn’t included, but hey’re working on it, and as stated above, they’re planning on adding it later.

Additional Installation Notes

You don’t have to re-install your games---the launcher will find it for you and automatically use the related directories. However, if you’re using a new PC, you can install the games directly from the app.

Those who are using RuneLite don’t have to worry either. It will detect the program, and you can use it to launch OSRS using RL or the official client.

The program also ups the security; once the unified and merged Jagex account kicks in, it will be harder to hack if you follow the protocols.

The Future of RuneScape

The Jagex Launcher would hold more than the RuneScape franchise. The statement on their site says, “Discover, install, and play games from the RuneScape universe and beyond.” That leaves things open for more games not in the RS/OSRS category.

Consequently, the end goal of the launcher would likely be a version of Steam, Origin, or Battle.net. You can have your personal library of Jagex games, complete with a friends list and possibly mod support. Managing subscriptions might also be done through the launcher. You can check news and updates from the launcher, so you’re informed of what’s happening in the games. Having all of these features in one app will be so convenient.

Speaking of their roadmap, they’ll be doing the merger slowly. The devs will introduce the next update step by step, fixing things along the way. It will be slow going if they want everything to go well, but the end product should be worth the wait.

That’s still far in the future. Right now, the developers need your help in ironing out kinks and bugs. If you opt to install the launcher for RuneScape or OSRS, make sure you report any errors or bugs so you can have the best version of the app in the future. Otherwise, it’s the best way to enjoy the program right now. It’s still bare bones, but the basic functionalities are there.

Conclusions

It’s interesting to note that both games are on Steam, which is what pretty much the Jagex Launch is supposed to be. Then again, the latter would have some functionalities that won’t be on Steam. Still, they’re very similar, except Steam has the better repertoire of games, while the other only has two (for now).

The end result would look like the current ones for EA and Ubisoft games on Steam. It would launch the other program (Origin, Ubisoft Connect) that would start the game. The process is tedious, bu the hassle of it dissipates if the account details were saved. But if you forget, that will take longer. This means Jagex is taking RuneScape farther, and with the announcement of a new game, the future is bright for this launcher.

Have fun and make the switch from farming OSRS to RS3 gold easier!
