What is a Swallowable Gastric Balloon and How is it Applied?

General Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Halil Alis gave important information about the subject. Obesity is one of the biggest problems of the age. Obesity is the increase in fat mass in the body due to the fact that the energy taken into the body is more than the energy spent. Many factors play a role in the formation of obesity. In addition, due to obesity, diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory system problems, joint diseases, skin problems can occur.

Endoscopic balloon applications have been used for approximately 35 years in order to lose 15-17% of the weight in patients with a body mass index up to 30 alone or in patients with surgical risk. Our 30 years of experience have shown that such practices are safe and effective in selected patients. However, endoscopy is required for insertion and removal of standard balloons. There is the possibility of causing problems such as perforation and intestinal obstruction in the inserted balloons, although it is rare. In order to eliminate these problems, a balloon that can be inserted without the need for endoscopy and that can be disintegrated by itself in about 4 months and taken with the toilet has been developed. Ellipse swallowable gastric balloon, a new method in weight loss treatment, is a comfortable treatment that does not require anesthesia or endoscopy. The method is applied in a short time when the patient is standing. After the procedure, the person can continue his daily life immediately. With this effective and fast treatment, satisfactory results can be obtained.

Elipse gastric balloon, which does not require anesthesia and endoscopy like the standard gastric balloon application, is administered by swallowing. It is excreted from the body spontaneously after a period of 4 months. It does not require any other action. It is an ideal option for people who are afraid of bariatric surgery. It helps to get rid of excess weight in a short time.

The capsule-sized Elipse gastric balloon is swallowed with water, accompanied by a specialist doctor. In the process, which takes as little as 15 minutes, when the swallowed balloon reaches the stomach, its location is observed with a fluoroscopy device. After this observation, when it is determined that it has reached the right place, the balloon is inflated by giving liquid. After the volume is completed to 550 ml, the connection part is removed by pulling from the mouth. In the first few days, complaints such as abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting can be seen. These complaints are minimized with the prescribed drugs. Thanks to the special liquid in the balloon, it breaks down on average in the 4th month and is expelled from the body naturally. Approximately 4-15% of excess weight can be lost in a 17-month period.

What Should Be Considered After the Balloon?

After the gastric balloon procedure, feeding is done gradually. Post-procedure nausea, etc. As long as stomach problems continue, liquid nutrition should be given. In the following days, mashed foods are consumed for three days. After this process, the return to solid consumption begins according to the individual's condition.

Liquid nutrition: All foods should be liquid and grain-free. Since stomach problems may occur for a few days after the procedure, care should be taken that these liquids are at room temperature. Extremely cold and extremely hot liquids should not be preferred. However, liquids should be consumed slowly and in sip. Example foods; grainless broth/chicken stock soup, ayran, unsweetened grainless compote, some soups.

Puree nutrition: In this part, foods should be crushed with a fork or blended and preferred. For example; Yogurt, mashed cheese and eggs, blenderized meat/chicken/fish, blenderized vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage are not recommended as they contain gas-forming elements).

Solid nutrition: In this nutrition, a healthy and balanced nutrition plan is created according to the energy needs of individuals. The most important point in this section is the distinction between liquid and solid. Drinking liquids with food should be avoided. If a liquid food is to be consumed, it should be consumed 30 minutes before or after meals. The reason for this is that when solid foods and liquids are taken at the same time, the volume of food increases in the stomach and creates pressure on the balloon.

  • All foods that increase stomach acidity; all acidic beverages, alcohol, fruits with high acidity (such as lemon, grapefruit, orange, and caffeine should not be preferred for the first ten days), sour and sharp sweet fruits (such as plum, pomegranate), gas-causing foods (such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) Foods that are high in calories and have no nutritional value, cooked with unhealthy cooking methods (fried and roasted) should not be included in the diet.
  • Liquids should be taken in small sips, meals should be chewed thoroughly and eating should be stopped as soon as satiety is felt. Foods should be consumed in an upright position and should not be left late. Food intake should be stopped 2-3 hours before going to bed.
  • Urine should be monitored for water consumption. Urine color should be light yellow. If it is dark yellow, water consumption should be increased.
  • After the gastric balloon application, this process should be continued in the company of a nutritionist / dietitian in order for weight loss to be healthy and in the best way.
  • Along with a healthy and balanced diet, regular exercise should be done.
