The population of snow leopards, which is the highest level of national protection in China, is on the rise. Saying that they estimate that the number of snow leopards living in Qinghai province has reached 1200, Shanshui Conservation Center managers Zhao Xiang said that the 800 infrared cameras they installed in the Sanjiangyuan region have taken approximately 100 thousand photos to date. Stating that after examining the photographs taken, they have identified at least 400 separate snow leopards in the region so far, Zhao said, “The distribution density of snow leopards in Sanjiangyuan is above the world average. In addition, this region has become the most important snow leopard habitat in the world.

In his statement, Zhang Yu, Head of the Wildlife Conservation Department, said that as a result of their research to date, they have reached the conclusion that the number of snow leopards in Qinghai is about 1.200.

Snow leopards are the highest nationally protected species in China and have been added to the 'species in danger of extinction in the near future' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Usually found in the Himalayas, at an altitude of 2 to 500 meters, leopards also use the mountainous regions of Tibet, Sichuan, Xinjiang, Gansu and Inner Mongolia as their habitat.
