Work has started in the workshop for the production of air ducts, which are metal pipes used in the assembly of ventilation systems at the construction site of Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NGS). The workshop, which is divided into several zones for the supply, assembly and welding, release of ready-made products, also includes a section for decarbonizing the welded joints of air ducts.

The workshop produces round, square and rectangular air ducts to be used in Akkuyu NPP's main facilities, including reactor sections and turbine buildings, as well as general buildings and structures of the power plant.

After the production of air ducts reaches full capacity, the production volume, which is important for the reliable operation of the nuclear power plant using the steel produced in Turkey, will be approximately 40 thousand m2 per year.

The control of the products, which are aimed to be produced at very high quality, is carried out in several stages. Air ducts, AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. It is sent for installation after passing strict access control with the participation of its experts.

Akkuyu Nuclear Inc. Sergey Butckikh, First Deputy General Manager and Director of NGS Construction, said: “The decision to build a workshop for the production of air ducts at the Akkuyu NPP construction site was driven by the need to optimize the fabrication schedule and supply ready-made products to the mechanical assembly work departments. During the preparation and implementation of the project for the establishment of the air duct workshop, the construction experience of other nuclear power plants was used. At the current stage, full-fledged production has been started in the workshop.”

Considering that the construction work is gaining momentum, the production volume of various materials required for the timely completion of the works is constantly increasing. Five concrete factories operating in the western part of the construction site simultaneously supply concrete for the construction of four power units. In addition, the site is equipped with areas for pre-assembly of reinforced concrete blocks and storage of heavy equipment, as well as refrigerated warehouses for inert materials. A retrofit workshop has been operating at the site since 2019, where all the armored and steel structures required for the construction of the walls and ceilings of nuclear power plant buildings are produced.

The construction project of Akkuyu NPP, Turkey's first nuclear power plant, continues in accordance with the planned schedule. Construction and installation work continues uninterruptedly in all parts of the main and auxiliary facilities, such as the four power units, as well as coastal hydrotechnical structures, power distribution systems, administrative buildings, training-practice center and physical protection facilities of the nuclear power plant.
