Kemeraltı's UNESCO Dream Comes True

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer Izmir Metropolitan Municipality informed the council members about the process of Izmir Historical Port City, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2020 and where the final preparations were made for it to be included in the permanent list. President Soyer said, “Our goal is to ensure that the Historic Harbor City, which includes Kemeraltı, is included in the permanent list of UNESCO World Heritage in the second half of 2024.”

Minister Tunç Soyershared their work on the UNESCO process in the Ancient City of Smyrna with the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality council members. Konak Mayor Abdul Batur, CHP, AK Party and MHP council members, TARKEM A.Ş. General Manager Sergenç İneler, Smyrna Ancient City Excavation Director Assoc. Dr. Akın Ersoy, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality bureaucrats and general managers of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality companies attended.

Soyer: “Our target is the second half of 2024”

President Tunç SoyerIn his speech, “I have young friends who work in the field management, prepare the candidacy application file and put effort into this job. Good luck to each of them. It's a miracle, it's an extraordinary job to complete a work that should have taken 16 months in 4 months. If Historical İzmir, Birgi, Gediz Delta and Foça, Çandarlı and Çeşme castles on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list are included in the permanent list, we will have brought together 6 points of the city with the UNESCO brand, together with Ephesus and Bergama. Then we will have taken a very important step towards making İzmir a world city. We are getting there step by step. We will continue to support with great enthusiasm and with all our strength.”

To be visited at the end of the month

Stating that they will visit Izmir Governor Yavuz Selim Köşger and Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy at the end of August, Mayor Soyer said, “We know how he supported the process from the beginning. We will ask for his support to ensure that our file is delivered to UNESCO in February. I am sure he will do his best in this regard. Our goal is to ensure that the Historic Harbor City, which includes Kemeraltı, is included in the permanent list of UNESCO World Heritage in the second half of 2024.

İneler: “We have completed our candidacy file in two years”

TARKEM INC. General Manager Sergenç İneler made a presentation about the process and the field. Stating that all the institutions of the city are together and the process was completed in unity, İneler continued as follows: “Kemeraltı and its surroundings are a place that harbors a lot of richness. We completed our candidacy file in two years. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is building the infrastructure, training the tradesmen, and doing the restoration. These will be very important factors in the UNESCO evaluation process.”

Ersoy: “We are trying to reveal the theater in a short time”

Smyrna Ancient City Excavation Head Assoc. Dr. Akın Ersoy also stated that the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality provided great support and said, “We would like to thank our chairman and council members. Thanks to you, we are making an effort to reveal a theater that emerged in Ephesus in a century, in a short time.”

Izmir Heritage of the World

Within the scope of the Izmir Heritage of the World, studies are continuing to include the historical Izmir, Birgi, Gediz Delta and the Genoese trade route, which includes Kemeraltı and its surroundings, and the Foça, Çandarlı and Çeşme castles on the permanent list of UNESCO World Heritage. If four more points are under the umbrella of UNESCO, 6 points of İzmir will be crowned with the UNESCO brand, along with Ephesus and Bergama on the permanent list.
