Anadolu University continues to shed light on our cultural heritage with the excavations it carries out. Şarhöyük – Dorylaion, which is one of the important settlements in Anatolia, located three kilometers northeast of Eskişehir city center, has regained the President's Decisive Excavation status as of 2022. Anadolu University Faculty of Letters, Archeology Department lecturer Assoc. Dr. Excavations that will shed light on the history of Anatolia will be resumed by Mahmut Bilge Baştürk with the participation of the scientific team and students from Anadolu University, Kırşehir Ahi Evran University and Eskişehir Osmangazi University.

Assoc. Dr. Baştürk: “With great support and efforts, the excavations that have been going on for years are being shed light again”

prof. Dr. Muhibbe Darga and Prof. Dr. Stating that the excavations carried out by Taciser Tüfekçi Sivas for many years have the quality of being a school with the participation of a significant number of students and faculty members, Anadolu University Faculty of Letters academic member Assoc. Dr. Mahmut Bilge Baştürk continued his words as follows: “The Şarhöyük Excavations, in which we have found very interesting data for Anatolian archeology, continued in the form of drilling works in the Lower City in the southern part of the mound and the necropolis area, approximately two hundred meters west of the mound cone, in addition to the studies on the mound cone. Quality results have been obtained in the excavations carried out since the beginning of the excavations. During the excavations conducted between 2015 and 2019 under the direction of the Eti Archeology Museum and under my scientific consultancy, we found very interesting data for Anatolian archeology. For example, we know today that the first settlement in Şarhöyük, that is Eskişehir, must have started in the Late Chalcolithic Period, in the second half of the 4th Millennium BC. This is of course our current data, that will change in the future.”

“We carried out studies that contributed to the world archeology literature”

Assoc. Stating that the data on the Early Bronze Age has now entered the world archeology literature with both national and international publications, Baştürk said, “We continued the work of our teachers on the Hittite strata and brought the world of archeology together with new finds in which the period can be better perceived. The same is true for the Hellenistic Period. In fact, we have determined that there were conflicts on the mound during the Kütahya - Eskişehir Wars, both with archaeological finds and trench remains. We will continue our work from where we left off.” said.

Anadolu University sheds light on our cultural heritage with its studies in Turkey and Eskişehir

For Anadolu University, which has provided uninterrupted support and effort for more than thirty years in excavations, the Şarhöyük Excavations are an important legacy that includes decades of hard work and support of many people, especially its teachers, its students, and the archeology adventure of the university. The contribution of Şarhöyük to Anatolia's past was not only limited to finds, but also paved the way for the foundation of an Archeology Department at Anadolu University. Many archaeologists working in other universities and museums of our country, as well as many academicians working in the Department of Archeology of Anadolu University, which will celebrate its thirtieth anniversary in 2023, gained their first excavation experiences in the Şarhöyük Excavations.
