Chinese tech giant Baidu has received permission to run fully driverless taxis for commercial purposes on public roads in the cities of Wuhan and Chongqing.
Baidu will offer self-driving commercial “robotaxis” in some areas of the two cities through its company-affiliated autonomous ride-hailing platform, Apollo Go.
Baidu stated that backup monitoring and parallel driving will be implemented to ensure the safety of passengers.
Baidu had launched a pilot service with Apollo Go in cities as diverse as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
China has introduced a number of policies in recent years to promote the development and commercialization of autonomous driving technology.
