2022-2023 Fishing Season Opens on 1 September

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry announced that the “2022-2023 Fishing Season” will open on 1 September.

The following is stated in the statement made by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry:

“The 4,5-2022 Fishing Season, which our fishermen have been looking forward to for 2023 months, will be opened with prayers by our Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Vahit Kirişci, and our fishermen on the night that connects Wednesday, August 31 to September 1, in Istanbul Sarıyer Kireçburnu Fisherman's Shelter. Similar opening events will be held on the same day in our provinces on the shores of the Marmara, Black Sea and Aegean Seas.

Our fishermen, who will hunt with purse seine and trawler method, will say vira bismillah and set sail in the Black Sea, Marmara and Aegean Seas on September 1, and in the Mediterranean on September 16. These fishing activities in all our seas will end as of April 15th. On the other hand, our small-scale coastal fishermen will be able to carry out their fishing activities throughout the year, provided that they comply with the regulations.

The past 2021-2022 aquaculture fishing season has been productive and fruitful for anchovy, which makes up more than half of our production by fishing, and the traditional fish of our throat, the bluefish. Researches, information and leading indicators in this hunting season point out that bonito, anchovy and bluefish fishing will be productive. Turbot, sea bass and sturgeon fry produced by our Ministry will be released into the sea by our Honorable Minister, which has become a tradition in the opening program.

With the Amendment to the Fisheries Law, which was heralded by our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan three years ago at the opening of the 2019-2020 season, the hands of all institutions and organizations authorized to control especially in the fight against illegal fisheries have been strengthened. In the 3-month period from the effective date of the law change to this day, 30 unlicensed illegal fishing vessels that could not be legally seized before were seized. In this way, illegal fishing was fought and the rights of fish and honest fishermen who fished according to the rules were protected.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry must comply with the fishermen's fisheries; It imposes prohibitions, limitations and obligations regarding species, length, time, depth, distance and fishing gear. It is important for our fishermen to engage in fishing activities in accordance with these regulations, especially considering the reproduction and growth characteristics of fish, both for their own benefit and for the sustainable operation of our resources.

Within the scope of rural development investments support given to fishermen by our Ministry; Grants provided to cold storage, fish processing and preservation facilities, and interest-reduced loans extended by Ziraat Bank and Agricultural Credit Cooperatives for the modernization of ships continue. In addition, the SCT-free fuel support given to our fishermen during all our governments, starting from 2004, will continue.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2022 as the International Year of Traditional Fisheries and Aquaculture. In line with this year's theme, decisions have been taken to benefit small-scale fishermen in our country as well, and the support given to the owners of fishing vessels smaller than 12 meters by our Ministry will be increased by approximately 4 times in the coming years.

We recommend that our people consume plenty of fishery products, which are produced with great effort and effort by our fishermen and have numerous benefits in human nutrition, especially in the development of children, and in the protection and maintenance of adult health. We wish that the 2022-2023 fisheries fishing season, which will be opened by saying Vira Bismillah, will be safe and trouble-free for our fishermen, and that the fishing will be plentiful and fruitful.”
