It is hosted by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The Roma Rights Workshop, organized by the Watch for Equal Rights Association, started at the Alsancak Historical Gas Factory. The opening of the workshop, which will end tomorrow (July 23, 2022), was attended by the Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Tunç SoyerZekiye Şenol, President of the Monitoring Association for Equal Rights, Ertuğrul Tugay, Deputy Secretary General of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, representatives of Roma associations and academics attended.

Soyer: “We meet the Romani culture, we get inspired”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerStating that the Ministry of Family and Social Policies has prepared a new Roma Action Plan within the scope of the “European Framework for National Roma Integration Policies”, the main purpose of our meeting here is to come together with our non-governmental organizations and develop suggestions regarding the content of this action plan. Many of my Romani brothers cannot enjoy their most basic rights on an equal basis with our other citizens. It lacks access to the most basic services in the fields of education, employment, housing, health and social services. Our Metropolitan Municipality will continue to do whatever it can to make up for the shortcomings of our Roma citizens. This is exactly why we established the Urban Justice and Equality Branch Directorate to fight discrimination and support equal citizenship. In this process, we meet the vast Romani culture of Izmir, we are inspired by this culture, on the other hand, we continue to hold the hand of our dear Roman brothers.

Workshop ends on July 23

The workshop was attended by academics, civil society workers and activists working in the field of Roma rights from Ankara, Aydın Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Denizli, Edirne, Gaziantep, Hatay, İstanbul, İzmit, İznik, Manisa, Mersin, Sakarya, Samsun, Tekirdağ and Van. participants are welcomed. On the first day, the problems faced by Roma citizens in terms of their access to basic rights such as education, health, housing and employment and urban services will be discussed. It will be discussed how to build policies on fighting discrimination and coexistence more effectively. Experience sharing and access to cultural rights in the face of difficulties faced by Roma will be discussed. On the second day, it is aimed that the working groups develop concrete proposals for the Roma Action Strategy Document within the framework of the roundtable meetings.
