Izmir is Ready to Host for the International Fair

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer, sharing the roadmap and expectations regarding the international gastronomy fair “Terra Madre Anadolu İzmir 2022” to be held in September, “Climate crisis, food crisis, energy crisis, poverty, drought, food security, food sovereignty, healthy food, human health. The topics we will talk about should include these topics. These are the sine qua non of what we call Terra Madre.”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyermet with Terra Madre-Slow Food stakeholders. This year, the preparations for the international gastronomy fair “Terra Madre Anadolu İzmir 2”, which will be held on September 11-2022, together with the İzmir International Fair (IEF), the main theme of which is “Mother Earth”, has come to an end.

President Soyer expressed his sensitivities at the meeting where the works to be carried out in İzmir, which will host the “Terra Madre” gastronomy fair under the leadership of Slow Food, were evaluated. Soyer said, “Izmir will make a debut. That's the gist of it. It will be an exciting meeting for all of us. We will host an international gastronomy fair. This is what can be said briefly from the outside. But gastronomy is neither gastronomy nor fair anymore. In today's world, all of these have different meanings. When you say gastronomy, there is agriculture, supply chains, food, food health, food sovereignty, health, energy, waste disposal. Marketing, trade, export, import are all intertwined. That's why we attribute so much meaning to what we do. This is not just an international fair for us. This means not only bringing Izmir to the world showcase but also exciting and raising awareness of the citizens under such a title again," he said.

“It will turn into a platform where crises, war and poverty are discussed”

Emphasizing the importance of working together, Soyer said, “We want to ensure the widest participation with farmers, producers, consumers, academics and all their interlocutors. This issue will turn into a platform where the solutions to the climate crisis, the food crisis, the energy crisis, the poverty, the war that humanity is currently in, are discussed and produced. This is how we look at Terra Madre. What will we say about the climate, food, food sovereignty, energy crisis, how will we find a solution? How will we fight poverty? How do we stop the war? How do we promote peace? Within Terra Madre we will seek the answers to all of these. We will discuss them with our interlocutors and try to find solutions. We will share those solutions and present them to humanity. The event is not just an event organization. It is a scientific meeting with a broad perspective as possible.”

“We will go through the 5 basic products of the Aegean”

Stating that they will proceed through 5 basic products in the Aegean Region, President Soyer continued his words as follows: “Grain, coastal fisheries, grapes, pasture livestock and olives. We think that these 5 products do not find enough value in this geography. However, these products have extraordinary competitive power in the world. And we think of this Terra Madre in the framework of better promoting, explaining and marketing these 5 products. In this fertile land of Anatolia, we wanted to start with the titles that we have the international competitive power and that we can present this most easily. These are the products of the work that we describe as 'Another Agriculture is Possible', which we call the fight against drought and poverty, while having high added value and compatible with the nature of this region. I say our sensitivities; climate crisis, food crisis, energy crisis, poverty, drought, food security, food sovereignty, healthy food, human health. The topics we will talk about should include these topics. These are the essentials of what we call Terra Madre.”
