Turkish Ophthalmology Association Ocular Trauma and Medicolegal Ophthalmology Unit Secretary Prof. Dr. Züleyha Yalnız Akkaya stated that according to the figures of the World Health Organization, approximately 55 million people suffer from eye injuries every year, and that approximately 23 million people in the world experience at least one-sided vision loss as a result of eye trauma.

prof. Dr. Adding that 19 million people lose one eye or lose a large part of their vision every year as a result of eye injuries, Akkaya gave the following information:

“Eye injuries are important because they cause permanent damage to the eye, decreased vision, vision loss and organ loss. The probability of this type of injury to be seen in people during their lifetime is 20 percent. In the summer months, eye trauma increases. As with all eye injuries, injuries in the summer months are mostly seen in men and children.

Eye traumas increase in the summer months due to the long days, hot weather, and more dangerous activities in the open air due to the holidays. During the harvest period, those working in agricultural areas are also exposed to eye trauma. Crime and violence tend to increase in the summer months. Since weddings and various celebrations are held outdoors, fireworks injuries are also injuries specific to the summer months. Keeping the windows of the vehicles open while cruising, and preferring sodas with bursting lids as beverages are among the rarer causes of eye trauma in the summer months.

Protective glasses also have a place in the prevention of domestic accidents that children and women are generally exposed to. Protective glasses and gloves should be worn when using chemical substances and in home renovations, and children should be kept away from the environment. The chemicals used in cleaning should be kept in locked cabinets, and the child should be informed about these substances when they reach sufficient maturity.
