Infectious Diseases specialist Prof. Dr. Meral Sönmezoğlu gave information about the most common infections in summer and ways to prevent them.

Increased incidence of adenovirus infections

Stating that they have encountered adenovirus infection, which occurs as a result of close contact and has a more severe course compared to the usual cold, Prof. Dr. Sönmezoğlu said, “It starts with children first and then infects parents. Today there are over 50 different adenoviruses identified and they can cause different infections. Although it can occur at any age, it is more common in children under the age of 5, especially in those who live in crowded environments such as kindergartens. Because it is transmitted through contact or contact with respiratory droplets and contaminated surfaces. In this group of children, many reasons such as the common use of items, the fact that they bring their hands to their faces more often, or they do not wash their hands as desired can accelerate the transmission. said.

Sönmezoğlu said, “Symptoms may vary according to adenovirus types. However, runny nose, sore throat, ear infections may develop in children. One of the most common symptoms is red eye, also known as conjunctivitis. Stomach and intestinal infections can also be seen in some people. It is very important that children gain this habit from a young age. In addition, surfaces and toys should also be disinfected. Because adenoviruses can stay on surfaces for a long time, their contagiousness continues.”

Legionnaires' disease that comes with air conditioners can be overlooked

prof. Dr. Meral Sönmezoğlu continued as follows:

“Legionnaires' disease is one of the diseases we fear in the summer months. Legionnaires is a bacterium that multiplies where water accumulates. It multiplies rapidly in environments where water accumulates, such as shower heads and air conditioners. When the shower or air conditioner is turned on, it sprays and spreads to the environment. When inhaled, a disease called Legionnaires' pneumonia or pneumonia occurs. The disease can be overlooked from time to time. However, since the treatment differs, it is extremely important to bring to mind and investigate the symptoms when they occur and to give the appropriate treatment.

Ponds, especially poorly cleaned pools, create the ideal environment for the spread of infections. For example, fungal infections can spread very quickly from pools. However, chlamydia infection can also spread from the pool and cause an infection in the eyes. Beta bacteria, which also cause colds, are also transmitted from pools. But it is very important that the cycle is very good. However, cleaning should be done by calculating the number of people per square meter. Because although a pool is regularly cleaned, if it is used by too many people, cleaning may not be enough in this case.

Absolutely unwashed vegetables and fruits should not be consumed. However, unhygienic, poorly cooked foods and foods that are sold in the open should be avoided. Especially during travels, water of unknown origin should not be consumed. One of the most important points is that antimicrobial drugs should not be used without consulting the physician.”
