Beware of Injuries in Eid-al-Adha!

YYU Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Instructor Member Tahir Talat Yurttaş gave information about the things to be considered in case of accidents that may occur during the Feast of Sacrifice. What should we do in sharp instrument injuries? What should we do in case of limb amputation?

Emergency Medicine Specialist Yurttaş gave the following information about the accidents:

“The cuts should be done by professional butchers. If possible, the person who will make the cut will wear steel butcher gloves, non-slip boots, safety glasses and apron to minimize possible accidents.

The knife used should not be blunt, and if it is very sharp, it will increase the severity of the injury that may occur.

The animal to be slaughtered should be tied well, while the rope or chain of the animal should not get tangled in the finger or hand. In the event of the animal's possible escape, such bindings can cause limb ruptures.

While the animal is being slaughtered, other people being at least 1 meter away from the animal will also prevent secondary injuries that may occur.

If there is a previous open wound on the hand or arm of the person who slaughters or chops the animal, closing this open wound and wearing gloves on it will protect it from the possible risk of infection.

What should we do in case of injuries?

Injuries can lead to serious consequences ranging from simple skin cuts due to penetrating sharp tools such as knives and lines to muscle, tendon, nerve, vascular injuries and even limb ruptures. The injuries that may occur due to the kicking and cresting of the animal are too many to be underestimated. These traumas can cause many serious fatal injuries, from internal bleeding to cerebral hemorrhage. In patients with such traumas, if there are symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, cold sweats, dizziness, and confusion, a healthcare provider should be consulted as soon as possible.

How should we intervene?

The cut area should be washed with plenty of water and then pressure should be applied with a clean cloth. This pressure should not be removed, even to check whether the bleeding has stopped, and continuous pressure should be continued for at least 15-20 minutes. Raising the arm above the level of the heart after intervention in injuries to the hand and arm will help control the bleeding. If there is a sinking foreign body, it should not be removed, but should be wrapped and fixed. Trying to remove the stinging body outside the hospital should not be done, as it may increase bleeding and cause secondary injuries.

What to do in case of limb amputation

If there is a severed limb, the limb should be wrapped with a clean wet cloth, if any, placed in a clean glove or bag, the mouth should be tied, and then transferred to a bag or container filled with ice. The limb should not come into direct contact with the ice. Bleeding control should be ensured by applying pressure dressing to the part where the limb is severed. Because the veins in this area will be exposed, if not intervened in time, it can cause vital bleeding. The person should apply to the hospital as soon as possible with a severed limb. The faster the intervention is done, the higher the success rate will be. The severed limb should be sutured within 6-8 hours at the latest.

What shall we do?

It should definitely not be done, as it will increase the risk of infection, using old traditional methods such as burning ashes, putting tobacco, putting meat on the injured area.
