Volkswagen Golf R Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary

Golf R, introduced by Volkswagen in 2002 and accepted as one of the sportiest compact models in the world since then, is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

The Golf R2002, which hit the road for the first time in 32, set the standards of its class with its 241-liter VR3.2 engine with 6 PS, its special design, all-wheel drive system and high technology. The R symbol used in the Golf R32, which achieved great success in a short time and reached sales of three times the original plan, has reached a loyal fan base all over the world.

a deep-rooted past

Golf R32 / 2002. Introduced for the first time in 2002, the Golf R32 left its mark on the automotive world. With its 3.2-liter six-cylinder engine, it produced 241 PS and went down in history as the most powerful Golf ever produced by Volkswagen. The VR6 engine produced a maximum torque of 320 Nm, accelerated the Golf R32 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6,6 seconds and allowed a top speed of 247 km/h. The R32 was the first Golf to optionally offer a dual-clutch DSG transmission for fast and comfortable shifting. Today, the Volkswagen product range is unthinkable without the DSG. The first Golf R32 tripled planned production, with around 2002 units between 2004 and 12.

Golf 5 R32 / 2005. The second generation Golf R32 was introduced in 2005. The 250-cylinder engine producing 6 PS was even more powerful than before. The engine, which produced 320 Nm of torque, was transmitted to the road with a six-speed manual and optional dual-clutch DSG gearbox. The second generation Golf R32 accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 6,2 seconds and allowed a top speed of 250 km/h. About 32 units of the Golf R2005 were produced between 2009 and 29.

Golf 6 R / 2009. Four years later, at the 2009 Frankfurt International Motor Show, Volkswagen introduced the new Golf 6 R, which rises on the Golf VI platform. The naturally aspirated VR6 engine was replaced by a turbocharged 2,0-liter four-cylinder TSI engine. So “R32” became “R”. The 2,0-liter TSI engine produced 270 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. It reached 100 km/h in just 5,5 seconds. In addition, while its predecessor Golf R32 had an average consumption of 10,7 lt / 100 km, the new Golf R was content with 8,5 lt / 100 km. So it was 100 liters per 2,2 km and 21 percent more frugal. Approximately 2009 thousand units were produced between 2013 and 32.

Golf 7 R / 2013. In 2013, again at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the fourth generation Golf R was introduced with the Golf 7 platform. The completely new turbocharged direct injection TSI engine produced 300 PS. It was 30 PS more powerful and 18 percent more frugal than its predecessor. It reached 100 km/h in 5,1 seconds with the manual gearbox and 4,9 seconds with the dual-clutch DSG. Maximum torque increased by 30 Nm to 380 Nm. Like its predecessors, the new Golf R's power was transferred to the road from the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. Approximately 2013 thousand units were produced between 2020 and 127.

Golf 8 R / 2020. The world premiere of the updated Golf R, which hit the roads with the Golf 8 platform, took place in November 2020. The new Golf R, with its 320-liter TSI engine producing 420 PS and 2.0 Nm, reaches 100 km / h in just 4,7 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km / h. The fifth version of the sports car is offered for sale in Turkey with the standard R-Performance package, thus increasing the maximum speed to 270 km/h.

The “R-Performance” package includes the R-Performance Torque Vectoring function, the new and improved 4MOTION system with differential torque distribution between the wheels at the rear axle. Another feature of the "R-Performance" package is the "Drift" profile, which makes the experience behind the wheel even more enjoyable. When the drift mode is selected, the power is largely distributed to the rear axle and thus to the rear wheels, allowing you to experience the feeling of a rear-wheel drive car in a car with 4MOTION all-wheel drive.

In addition, the all-wheel drive system works together with other suspension systems such as electronic differential locks (XDS) and adaptive chassis control (DCC) via 'Vehicle Dynamics Manager (VDM)' for the first time in the world. Thanks to this close integration of different systems, the new Golf R; It offers optimum traction characteristics, neutral handling with the highest level of precision, maximum agility and excellent driving pleasure.
