Attention to Congenital Heart Diseases in Children!

Pediatric Cardiology Specialist Prof. Dr. Ayhan Çevik gave important information about the subject. Symptoms of congenital heart diseases in children appear with different signs and symptoms in different age groups.

Heart disease in children is a life-threatening disease that can cause loss of vital functions and loss of the patient at any age. In this group of diseases, there are symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, bruising, enlarged heart, decreased blood pressure and increased heart rate, which we call respiratory distress. In some of the congenital heart diseases that occur in the neonatal period, if the correct diagnosis and treatment is not applied after birth, it can cause loss of function of different organs or loss of life. In later age periods, it may cause retardation of growth and development according to the type and weight of the disease, fatigue quickly in activities that require effort, development of respiratory failure symptoms, swelling in different parts of the body and extremities, and loss of the patient in advanced stages of heart failure in the last period.

Prof. Dr. Ayhan Çevik, “Symptoms and findings in the neonatal period: the number of respirations that should be in the baby is higher than normal (rapid breathing), intermittent feeding effort, which is characterized as fatigue during sucking or feeding, therefore, there is a desire to feed by resting intermittently, Lack of weight gain and bruising in various parts of the body, especially around the mouth and inside the mouth, can be counted as restlessness. It is necessary to control the expected growth-development steps, that is, weight and height measurements, with appropriate development curves after the newborn period. In order to evaluate the effort capacity, cardiological control is required in the case of motor activities, i.e., fatigue during and after the exercises, rapid breathing, difficulty in breathing and accompanying bruising in the mouth and tongue with the lips, and in the case of frequent respiratory system infections.

Complaints such as decreased performance in exercise and sports activities, fatigue, growth arrest or absence, fainting or fainting, chest pain or tightness during exercise, fast heart beat or palpitation are common heart disease findings in toddlers and older children.

Dr.Ayhan Çevik said, “There may be no signs or symptoms in some of the childhood heart diseases. Pediatricians may have examination findings such as a heart murmur that can only be detected in healthy child controls. In the group of congenital heart diseases, which do not show symptoms in the early period, the diseases progress insidiously and cause delay in treatment with the use of body support mechanisms and the use of body reserves. Although there are no signs of disease in the last case, diseases can be suspected with some examination findings that can be determined by pediatricians. After these findings, when the body support mechanisms lose their strength, the symptoms and signs of the disease become evident, but in this case, unfortunately, it can be stated that the chance of treatment of the patient decreases.
