Presentation to the producers
At the launch, which started with the Folk Dances show of Seferihisar Children's Municipality, Ata Temiz, Head of IT Department of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, and Şevket Meriç, Head of Agricultural Services Department, introduced the "İzmir Agriculture" mobile application to the producers. In his opening speech, President Tunç Soyer said that they took two important steps in İzmir to save agriculture from the deadlock it was in and said, “The first is to support ancestral seeds and domestic animal breeds, and the second is to grow small producers. What is needed for this change is planning and support. In other words, to plan which crops will be planted where and when and how much, to support small producers under the roof of cooperatives and unions. Planning is perhaps the most crucial aspect of the job. Today we are at Kulturpark. If someone says that they will build an 18-storey building here tomorrow, you will laugh. Because this place has a plan. So, is there a plan in agriculture? Unfortunately not. We are in an agricultural policy where no one knows what to do, what to grow, what to get in return, and where only the big ones exist. On the contrary, agriculture should first hold the hand of the small producer and help him market his product. We need to plan for this. We do basin-scale planning. To do this, we need data. That's why the Izmir Agriculture mobile application is very important," he said.
Combating drought and poverty with planning
Saying that CHP municipalities all over Turkey are trying to do something about agriculture, Mayor Soyer said, “Perhaps our biggest difference is to implement practices where all these studies fit into a framework and turn into a policy. In other words, when we say another agriculture, we are not only working to give a breath of fresh air to small producers in İzmir. We show how we should implement agricultural policies when a new Turkey is established, so that we can get rid of the import-oriented policies we are in today. For this, every work we do has a backbone, a philosophy. This digital application offered today is the product of such a view.”
“It will open the doors of world food trade to all farmers”
Stating that it is very possible to end poverty, which is spreading and becoming massive day by day, President Soyer said, “Our vision of Another Agriculture is Possible and our six-legged İzmir Agriculture strategy proves this possibility. With İzmir Agriculture, we are struggling with drought and poverty at the same time. We are carrying one of the most important gastronomy fairs of the world to Izmir in September. Terra Madre Anatolia fair is one of the most important pillars of our İzmir Agriculture strategy. This fair will open the doors of world food trade to all the farmers of our country, especially the producers from İzmir. Happily, the Cittaslow member municipalities in Northern Cyprus will also be with us at this fair. We say that our small producer should sell his product in the market if he wants it, or in the markets with the most beautiful packaging. If he wishes, he can export his product from our ports to the whole world. As long as our farmers come together under the roof of cooperatives and unions, no power can stand in their way. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is next to our producer, which is organized just for this.”
The application provides the opportunity to meet with buyers
Mayor Soyer said that with the İzmir Agriculture mobile application, producers in İzmir are provided with the opportunity to receive agricultural support, exhibit their products and meet with buyers with just one click. Soyer said, “Thanks to our application, our producers get aquaculture suggestions about their field and the product they produce. Our farmer can follow the health and development of the plants in his field with colors and percentages through this software. If there is a problem in the development of the produced plant, it can receive technical support from our agricultural engineers thanks to the 'ask the engineer' module. Thanks to this application, our producer can access the market prices of many expense items such as market prices, medicine, fertilizer, diesel and feed prices.
We can analyze the production of our farmer operating in any part of İzmir with the satellite imaging system and the algorithms included in the software. In this way, we understand which products are needed in İzmir throughout the year based on the supply-demand balances. Our İzmir Agriculture application strengthens our vision of “Another Agriculture is Possible” with the opportunities offered by digitalization.”
“We stand up in production under the leadership of Tunç President”
Yeniboğaziçi Mayor Mehmet Zurnacılar, a member of the TRNC Cittaslow Network, said, “The dream that started with the visit of our esteemed President Tunç Soyer is coming true today. This is our first time at such an event. Your contributions cannot be paid. We do great work together. Under the leadership of Tunç President, we stand up in production. His works are applied in Turkey and in Cyprus. We are watching from İzmir that another agriculture is possible. We produce together. You will be able to see more than 80 flavors and handmade items at the Cyprus Days producer meeting.
“We need to further strengthen our ties with Cyprus”
After the presentation, Mayor Soyer, who attended the Cyprus Day, where the Cyprus municipalities in the Cittaslow Network opened a booth at the same place, had the opportunity to taste Cypriot foods. Soyer said, “The fact that our Cypriot brothers and sisters are here and exhibiting their tastes, culture and traditions reminds us once again how strong and rich we are. Very nice day. We need to further strengthen our ties with Cyprus,” he said. Mayor Soyer visited the painting exhibition “You Complete Your Picture”, one part of which was completed by the children of Seferihisar Children's Municipality and the other part was completed by the children of Yeni Boğaziçi Mehmetçik Children's Municipality.
