Tayyare Cultural Center, which plays an important role in promoting Bursa's cultural, historical and social richness, is hosting another meaningful exhibition. MS Social Awareness Exhibition, prepared by Demirtaşpaşa Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School teacher Gökay Yavuz and his students, who managed to overcome the disease with early diagnosis and treatment, was opened to the public. Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş, Provincial National Education Deputy Director Murat Taşdelen, AK Party Provincial Vice President Mustafa Yavuz, Bursa Multiple Sclerosis Association President Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Turan, neurologist Assoc. Dr. Meral Seferoğlu, school administrators, students and many citizens attended.

Before the opening speeches, Demirtaşpaşa Vocational and Technical Anaolu High School student Fadile Demir read to the participants the text of her teacher Gökay Yavuz's story about her life when she was diagnosed with MS and until she recovered during the treatment process.

social awareness

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Alinur Aktaş said that the exhibition is a first in Turkey. Reminding that everyone has the possibility of getting sick, President Aktaş said, “People should know the value of their health. We all have the potential to get sick and we must take the necessary precautions before we lose our health. There are around 80 thousand MS patients in our country. However, there are hundreds of thousands of people outside of the known, and these people cannot walk, cannot see, cannot hold their hands, but they are not even aware that they have MS. Stating that the exhibition has already been requested from many cities, Mayor Aktaş said, “The aim of this exhibition is to introduce people to MS, to enable them to start a conscious treatment and to create a social awareness. To make them show willpower like my teacher Gökay. I heartily congratulate him. Therefore, we are holding the first MS exhibition of this kind in Turkey, and it has already made a splash across the country. Our school, which is holding the exhibition, receives offers to open an exhibition from Kayseri, Izmir and many other cities, especially Istanbul. If there are studies that will raise awareness in the city and in the country, all of our facilities are open to these activities.”

Early diagnosis is important

Bursa Multiple Sclerosis Association President Prof. Dr. Ömer Faruk Turan also stated that the third week of May is celebrated as World MS Week. Stating that this week is celebrated with various events all over the world, Turan said, “MS is not a bad disease. If treated early, with appropriate treatments and supportive support, 80 percent of MS patients recover. Not every MS patient has to go bad. Early diagnosis and early treatment keep these patients in their normal lives to a great extent.”

Assoc. Dr. Meral Seferoğlu said, “This exhibition tells us what an individual with MS can achieve and his relationship with himself and his social environment. There is a lot for all of us to learn in this exhibition,” he said.

The exhibition, which deals with the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, the diagnosis and treatment process, the psychological state of the patient, the behavior of the society towards the patient, can be visited between 28:09 and 00:17 until 00 May.
