News sites, which have become an important part of our lives with technology, are competing with traditional media. Emphasizing that news has become a product that is produced and consumed instantly and quickly, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan, the effect of the news; He drew attention to the fact that the subject, content and the medium in which it is published are determined. Noting that the written media in our country has already lost the competition with news sites, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan, “The main problem of journalism is that it cannot produce original content.” said. İrvan added that better journalism is possible if the opportunities of digital journalism are used well.

Üsküdar University Communication Faculty Journalism Department Head Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan evaluated the importance of news sites, which have become an important part of our lives with technology.

Stating that it would be misleading to evaluate journalism limited to printed newspapers and televisions, which are accepted as traditional media, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan said, “Of course, traditional media has a serious weight, especially in terms of forming public opinion. However, now news has become a product that is produced and consumed instantly and quickly. In fact, it can be said that there is no other product that is produced as fast as news. In this new media age, the medium of news is news/media sites.” said.

The effect of the news; determines the subject, content and the medium in which it is published

Noting that there are several factors that undoubtedly determine the impact of the news, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan said, “Undoubtedly, it is the subject and content of the news that determines the effect. Regardless of where it is published, news about certain events has a very high impact. For example, disaster news such as earthquake, flood, assassination news, war news. The second is the media where the news is published, whether the media is reliable or not. While no one doubts its accuracy when a news is published in a known and reliable medium, it will not have the same effect when published in an unknown or unreliable medium. If news/media sites are associated with reliable media outlets, they can transfer the same trust to the internet.” he said.

Printed media lost competition with news sites in Turkey

Touching on the competition of news sites with the print media in today's conditions, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan, “If we talk in the context of Turkey; The print media has already lost its competition with news sites. We can understand this from the falling circulations and the headlines that fell out of the agenda when they were published the next day. Especially in a country like Turkey where the agenda is changing rapidly, the print media is too exhausted to enter into a hot news competition. No one talks about the headlines of any newspaper anymore. Without the morning news of the television, the headlines would be completely worthless.” he said.

Newspapers in the West turned to special news

Evaluating the situation in the world, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan said, “In countries such as Western Europe and the USA, printed newspapers continue to be important even if they lose circulation. Why? Because these newspapers are oriented towards special news rather than hot news. If the reader can find the news published in the newspaper he/she has in his/her hand, why would he/she pay for your printed newspaper? Newspapers in Turkey do not want to accept this fact. The trend will be that printed newspapers give up paper in the near future. Of course, exorbitant increases in paper and ink prices will also be effective in this.” said.

The main problem of journalism is not being able to produce original content.

Evaluating the concept of journalism and its effects on the journalism profession, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan said:

“The real problem of journalism is that it cannot produce original content. Why? Because instead of investing in reporters, they subscribe to a few news producing agencies. In fact, we are talking about a journalism that automatically broadcasts the news from the agencies so that there is no need for copying. How much journalism can one call this now! Copy-paste journalism, on the other hand, is nothing but labor theft. If you call this, it is called plagiarism journalism. Undoubtedly, the fact that anyone who wishes to have a journalism education or not can open a news website has a great role in this. This understanding of journalism, which ignores ethical principles, also causes great harm to the journalism profession. Of course, the solution is primarily to enact the internet media law and to encourage news sites to do journalism within the framework of ethical principles.”

Internet journalism field should be brought into law

Noting that it can be said that news sites have replaced the print media, especially for the younger generation, Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan said, “I don't see anyone among my students who follow the printed newspaper anymore. What needs to be done is to enact a law in the field of internet journalism, which has been journalism for 25 years without a law, to create a mechanism that implements ethical principles, to enable journalists working on news sites to obtain journalistic identity (press cards), and to take measures to facilitate the transition to digital. If we can use the opportunities of digital journalism well, we will see that better journalism is possible. There is no point in insisting on a printed newspaper for good journalism.” he concluded his speech.
