Soyer: “Olive is very precious to us”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer“There has to be a link between economy and ecology. If there is no bond, then we are sacrificing ecology for the sake of economy. If this happens, it means that we have sacrificed the economy. If we are going to do agriculture, we have to use our underground resources and water well, which is compatible with nature. Otherwise, this land will lose its fertility and starve us. We try to do agriculture by believing and respecting the fertility, power and wealth of these lands. We say Another Agriculture is Possible. Olive, immortal tree… We don't own it, it owns us. We will pass by. But the history of humanity first met the olive as a tree and was grateful to the olive. Olive nourished, satiated, healed. Olives are very precious. Why an auction is held, you cannot measure the value of something very valuable. Now you do what he appreciates so that he can appreciate it himself. We did the first one in Seferihisar. We counted olive trees over 200 years old. We identified around 500 olive trees. There was one of them, which is 800 years old. We named her after the grandmother in Buket Uzuner's book, we called her Umay Granny. Because the wise tree has much to teach us. “Olive is very precious to us,” he said.

“We will defend it to the end”

Stating that they will continue to protect olive trees, Soyer said, “We are very lucky. We live together with such a great treasure in this beautiful geography. I wish that this sacred and wise tree will continue to keep our children and grandchildren alive. We will defend it to the end. We hear they are trying to pass laws. We never let go. We will defend it to the end," he said.
