Emphasizing the importance of milk consumption in Ramadan, Nuh Naci Yazgan University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics Department Prof. Dr. Neriman İnanç, “A glass of milk gives a feeling of fullness for 5 hours. Milk consumption in sahur is very important.”

Stating that it is absolutely necessary to get up for sahur in order to spend the month of Ramadan in a healthy way, Nuh Naci Yazgan University Faculty of Health Sciences Nutrition and Dietetics Department Head Prof. Dr. Neriman İnanç suggested that foods that leave the stomach later in sahur and that will not change blood sugar too quickly should be preferred. Stating that it has been scientifically proven that a glass of milk keeps you full for 5 hours, İnanç advised those who fasted to drink milk at sahur.

prof. Dr. Neriman İnanç, “Foods with high protein content delay hunger by prolonging the emptying time of the stomach. Milk not only helps us feel full because it is a food with a high protein content, but also supports the body's fluid needs. Scientists show milk as the first among the foods that reduce the need for hunger of the human body, and they state that a glass of milk keeps the person full for 5 hours without feeling the emptiness of the stomach. İnanç stated that the milk sugar lactose helps to meet the energy needs of the body by supporting the glycogen stores used in hunger, and the fat in its composition provides a feeling of satiety by staying in the stomach for a long time. He underlined that milk also helps to meet the needs of minerals and vitamins, especially calcium lost through sweat in hot weather during Ramadan.

To maintain your weight, satisfy your sweet needs with milk desserts

Pointing out that long-term hunger causes a slowdown in basal metabolic rate and that weight is usually gained at the end of Ramadan, İnanç said, “We see sherbet dumplings that raise blood sugar after long-term hunger at our traditional tables set up in Ramadan. I recommend those who want to consume sweets other than a glass of milk they drink at sahur, to prefer milky desserts such as low-sugar rice pudding and gullaç. Sweets like these help meet our calcium needs and prevent us from gaining weight during Ramadan.
