Samsun Smart City Traffic Safety Project Will Increase Quality of Life

The 'Smart City Traffic Safety Project', which Samsun Metropolitan Municipality will implement together with ASELSAN, will increase the quality of life of people with environmentally compatible, physical, digital and human systems. Works have been completed in 54 of the 79 intersections within the scope of the project, 42 percent of which has been completed. 30 junctions have been brought to a position that can serve locally adaptively. When the placed cameras are activated, artificial intelligence will be activated and the vehicles on the junction arms will be counted instantly, and in line with these counts, the green light times at the intersection will be adjusted automatically within the determined limits, while the system will relieve the traffic in many situations such as emergency. Fuel economy and driving comfort will increase. The system is planned to be put into service in the second half of this year.
Continuing its efforts to bring new technologies to Turkey, Military Electronics Industry (ASELSAN) is a solution to the urban traffic problem of cities. In this project, prepared by Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Transportation Department, cooperation was established with ASELSAN. In June last year, the protocol of the 'Smart City Traffic Safety Project' was signed between ASELSAN and Samsun Metropolitan Municipality. 54 percent of the 'Smart City Traffic Safety Project', to which the Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Demir attaches great importance and the works started immediately, has been completed.

HOW WILL THE PROJECT PROVIDE ADVANTAGES WHEN THE CAMERAS ARE ACTIVATED?

With the project, the waiting time in traffic will be shortened and fuel savings will be provided in motor vehicles. Thanks to the system, which will provide services such as event detection, air-road condition measurement, traffic data measurement, intersection attendance control, passenger information-direction, when the cameras placed are activated, the vehicles on the intersection arms will be counted instantly and in line with these counts, the green light times at the intersection will be automatically determined within the specified limits. will be set. In addition, driving comfort will increase with the project, which will reduce the number of vehicles waiting at the intersections, the waiting times of the vehicles at the intersection and the energy consumption.

PRESIDENT DEMIR: ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS WILL BE OFFERED IN TRAFFIC

Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Demir emphasized the importance of their joint work with ASELSAN and said:

“It will solve traffic and transportation problems with traffic applications and information technologies that will be included in the smart city concept. Information such as speed and location collected from sensors placed at certain points of the city will offer an alternative solution in cases of traffic jams. In this direction, the signaling times can be changed according to the traffic situation. When obstacles that will affect the traffic flow such as accidents occur, quick and effective interventions will be made. It will be ensured that the units that need to intervene on the scene such as the fire brigade, police and ambulance will be able to move quickly in the traffic.”

TRAFFIC FLOW RATE WILL INCREASE

Reminding that they won the 'Municipality Award' with this project at the 'AUS Turkey 5th Way of Mind in Transportation Awards' organized by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Association of Turkey (AUS Turkey), President Mustafa Demir said, “54 percent of the project has been completed. Our work at the intersections continues intensively. Artificial intelligence has not been deployed yet. The cameras we placed are not active. This project will increase the quality of life of people with physical, digital and human systems compatible with the environment. It will carry our Samsun into the future by offering a modern, competitive, functional and sustainable future. In addition, the traffic flow rate will increase with the project, which aims to prevent traffic accidents.

Underlining that a very functional project is being carried out, Samsun Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Demir said, “The status of public transportation systems will also be monitored online. In this context, the most appropriate arrangements can be made for the public. Before the project, we, as the Metropolitan Municipality, took X-rays of Samsun traffic. With the smarter traffic applications, problems such as time loss, fuel consumption and carbon emissions caused by the increasing number of vehicles will be prevented," he said.

SAFE LIFE WILL RISE TO THE MAXIMUM LEVEL

Stating that the works have been completed at 79 of the 42 intersections within the scope of the project, President Mustafa Demir said, “30 intersections have been brought into a position to provide local adaptive service. 'Smart intersection system' studies continue at 11 intersections. In total, 67 percent of the 66 kilometer fiber infrastructure line has been completed. The poles, camera and panel assembly of the Park Violation Detection System (PITS), the infrastructure of which has been completed, has been completed. With this system, which will make a serious contribution to reducing environmental and air pollution, there will be a great improvement in the culture of urbanism. The established system will both make life easier and cost less. Most importantly, it will maximize safe living in this city,” he said.

On the other hand, the cameras installed within the scope of the Urban Security Management System (KGYS) and License Plate Recognition Systems (PTS) project carried out by the Ministry of Interior throughout Samsun actively serve, while the cameras installed by the Metropolitan Municipality have not been put into use yet. The system is planned to be put into service in the second half of this year.
