İzmir, which was awarded the "Flag of Honor" in 1970 and the "Plaque of Honor" in 2014, applied for the European Award on January 15, 2022, with a file describing its membership in international organizations, cooperation with cities abroad, project partnerships and international activities. . Izmir was shortlisted with Bamberg and Ingolstadt from Germany, Palanga from Lithuania, Bolesławiec from Poland and Ternopil from Ukraine.
